Hi! I've finally started my MG42 project. Building it from scratch is the only way for me to go. I can't afford the zib nor a deac nor can these be shipped to my country even if i could...Kalbs pointed me to john-tom.com where i found some great plans. After some tweaking and adjusting to make it a little more realistic, i had the plans printed in full scale. I've decided to build it using cardboard... Just kidding. I'm made cardboard mockups to give to my sheet steel worker (same guys who fabricated my ppsh parts). Some differences with the john-tom plans: 1) Barrel shroud and receiver will be one piece instead of separate 2) In the real MG42, the side panels of the barrel shroud do not taper as much as shown in the plans. I've made adjustments to correct this. 3) I've also enlarged the holes in the barrel shroud. Even so, there will be discrepancies (a lot) due to the inherent limitations of the fabrication methods used. Here are the parts from my fabricators: Wooden stock: still raw Aluminium Booster cone/flashider Steel barrel shroud, receiver and topcover Realsteel Yugo Basket drum magazine: Modified the an ak hop to feed from 45degrees Version 3 gearbox fitting. I had to trim away some tiny parts of the gearbox like the guide lugs for the selector plate (this will be full auto only anyway). It was easier to hacksaw the gearbox than the steel. Pistol grip assembly is still being fabricated. It'l be bigger than normal to accommodate the motor. Here it is so far... Still waiting on some drum mag internals to make this able to shoot. The rest of the stuff i'm waiting for in the mail are mostly for the externals: bipod, front and rear sight assemblies, feed tray, and a broken charging handle. Still have a lot to do... Might need some help from the great RC for some PVC detailing... Also, i didn't realize that my fabricator had it made in stainless steel. No wonder it was so expensive. It'l be difficult to paint too...any recommendations?

That's beautiful. Keep us updated if you can when you finish it. How much have you spent on the project so far? I've always wanted an MG but I don't have the skill to build one. Can you just have the steel blu'd?

volkssturm - thanks! It's still a little bare, but once all the RS nubbins come in the mail it'l look much better. @ -flyingSquirrelcat - Thanks! All i did really was tweak and adjust john tom's blueprints. My metal works guys did most of the hard work. There's no way i have the skills to do this by myself at home. But for those of you with metal working skills, i think it'l be easy. Oh the "Bustybabes" (as my wife call em)? I used to scratchbuild in 1:6 scale. Let's just say it's easier to make tiny clothes and armor for female figures. timberwolf61 - Thanks! I've spent A LOT on this project already. My most expensive build. But like i said, it isn't possible for me to get my hands on a deac or a replica, both financially and logistically so this is the only way to go for me. If i had my own metal working skills it might've halved the cost...

zoidberg20 - Thanks! So far, with just the barrel shroud, receiver, top cover, gearbox, booster cone, outer barrel, innerbarrel, basket drum = 5kgs. I wonder how much it'll weigh with the bipod, batteries, and bbs.... burke - So far, around 200usd Did some more planning...Looks like I'll have to wait untill all the parts arrive before i can go any further. I need the feed tray to position the drum mag and plan the feeding method. I need the airsoft drum mag to work on the basket drum. I need the fabricated grip assembly to finalize and secure the gearbox in the receiver. I need the external parts to mark positions in the steel receiver and shroud. Haha. Still loads to do. I wish i had metal working equipment and skills so that i could do all the cutting and drilling but i'll have to wait for everything to arrive, mark it out on the steel receiver, then bring it back to my fabricator to do the welding, cutting, drilling, etc.... Was just excited when the main parts arrived but alas...still have more waiting to do til i can advance. Frustrating! Will update soon...

Thanks! Little steps forward while waiting for everything to arrive. Worked on the stock today. Also enlarged the holes on the receiver to fit rivets for detailing. Thank God for power drills and cobalt drill bits.

What the capacity of that drum-mag you think?

I'd estimate it at around a thousand, give or take. Will take more accurate measurements once the gun is up and running.

Wow! Very very impressive. Not at all sure to tell you what to do about the stainless steel but I'm sure you'll come up with something. Looks exceptionally nice so far.

Thanks! Some updates: Changed my mind about the hop up. I've decided to used an unaltered AK hop chamber instead of the 45 degree feeding one that i made. This way, i can insert the feed tube through the bottom, which is better cosmetically (i would have to cut a window out of the side of the receiver for the 45 degree hop). I've also secured the internals into the receiver. The gearbox is a tight fit in the grip stick and is anchored to the receiver via a screw, acting as a pin. This same screw also helps to secure the plastic grips to the frame. I've also lined the steel gripstick with electrical tape and i've wraped the motor contact points with electrical tape as well. I don't want to electricute myself. The inner barrel (madbull 650mm) is secured within the outer barrel via electric tape spacers. The inner barrel is a snug fit inside the booster cone, which is held in place by a set screw. A spring pushes the hop up and innerbarrel securely against the gearbox. Test fired it today: It's ALIIIIVE! Drum fed well enough, sound activation and switch activation worked well. No jams or misfeeds as of first testing. It's LOUD too. Still waiting for: Real steel front and rear iron sights Real steel feed tray (to mount the drum mag) Real steel bipod other cosmetic parts...

You're a hell of a good custom gun builder. Really enjoy watching your progress with clear photos and instructions. You're very talented at this aspect of the hobby.

Almost done... Made some of the externals using flattened PVC. The top cover latch is spring loaded and works great. The barrel door is only cosmetic and is essentially fixed in place. I just need to figure out a way to attach the bipod (probably will involve welding) and i need to cut the feed tray (or the reciever) to fit.

To paint the stainless steel, get a metal etching primer. It'll dig right into it.
|
|
|
Post by jimmiroquai on Dec 14, 2010 5:22:19 GMT -5
Thanks! I'll look into that. Will the etching primer affect the plastic parts? Here it is so far. Bipod and feed tray attached, Drum mag mounted. Weighs in at around 17.5lbs or 7Kg without bbs. It's HEAVY. Still has some problems though: 1) welder accidentally welded the pivot of the bipod so it can't turn horizontally (bummer) 2) The feed tube spring accidentally got caught between the top cover and receiver, giving it a nasty kink, causing my drum to misfeed horribly unless i hold the spring in a certain way. Also, because of the long feed tube, the drum has to be constantly wind to keep up with the ROF. Does anyone know how to rewire the drum mag so that when i pull the trigger it auto matically winds the drum? Anyway, here it is so far, awaiting final touches and paintjob.

Can't do anything but drool at this point About the painting, break it down and take it to a auto painter.
