With the close of the Battle of the Bulge, it has become clear that the Third Reich is in its final days. Loyal Germans hold the line outside of Berlin as Volkssturm, citizen soldiers, fill the gaps left by the fallen. Allied forces, encouraged by their successful defense and counter-attack during the winter, advance on Berlin with the goal of bringing Hitler to his knees. The Soviet Union advances quickly in the east under the fury of their tanks and artillery. Great Britain and the United States advance in the west, slowed by the casualties and supply deficits left by the latest German offensive. It is here that members of the 3rd US Army Group meet the determined resistance of the 6th SS Division. When: February 18th, 2012. Gates will open at 0800. Players should plan to arrive by 0900. Game play is planned from 1000 - 1700. Where: Afton, VA ( maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=white+mountain+rd+afton+virginia&sll=38.092417,-78.839264&sspn=0.446368,0.933838&ie=UTF8&ll=37.988316,-78.785877&spn=0.055876,0.11673&z=13&iwloc=addr&om=1) Cost: $25 via PayPal to GckMntr@aol.com The age limit is 16+ but I will approve people younger on a case by case basis. PM for approval. Uniforms and Equipment: US: - Original or reproduction US M1937 wool uniforms, OD BDUs - M43 Jacket or OD M65 Jacket - M1 Steel Pot, OD/Brown "Jeep Cap" - WWII Webgear, M56 Webgear (remove buttpacks) - Any period US weapon Germans: - Any original or reproduction German wool or camouflage uniform, gray BDUs - Stahlhelm or Feldmutzen - WWII German Webgear - Any period German weapon Volkssturm: - Appropriate looking civilian clothing for the period - Any period weapon from any side - Any bolt action "classic style" rifle without a scope or accessories (eg. M24, M40, Bar-10, etc. No L96s and other obviously modern looking rifles) Note: All submachine gunners will be limited to 400 rounds of ammunition. The goal of this event is to finally get some WWII action in VA. This is NOT a living history event. It is an airsoft game. Additionally, this is a fictional battle, not a reenactment of a real one. As a result, your impressions do not have to be perfect, but they do need to conform to the above guidelines. Do the best that you can within the above guidelines and if you have any questions, let me know. This event is PRE-REGISTRATION only. No walk-ons will be allowed to take the field. To register, PM me with the following information. -Real Name -Age -Team (Germans/Volkssturm or Allies) -Email Address I will email out player packets to all registered players about a week before the event. This will include logistical stuff like waivers. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

Camping will be available on site Friday night for anyone who wants to break up the trip or just wants to hang out and socialize with some other players. I can't be commit to be there Saturday night, so there is no camping there that night.

Funny how no one in the Virginia thread has piped up about coming out to Cutlass. Why am I not surprised?
Should be there defending das fatherland.

What do I mean by "Appropriate looking civilian clothing for the period" for the Volkssturm? The Volkssturm was a national miltia that was founded towards the end of the war to deal with the manpower shortages. They existed on paper long before that, but were not a real fighting force. As a rule, think wool and think warm and you should be on a good start. I certainly won't hold it against you if you don't wear a tie!

Very happy to see WWII Airsoft spreading into the VA area. HornetWSO is a good friend of mine and he has told me great things about the field and the event coordinator.
Hopefully I'll be able to attend with my group of 3 from Long Island. Either way, this event appears to be one that everyone should try to attend. I know I will.
Cheers,

To clarify, the 400 round limit on submachine gunners is their total load. There will be time between patrols to reload magazines and there is no limit to how many times you can reload your magazines.
The logic behind this is to reduce the amount of full auto fire. As has been discussed at length elsewhere, submachine guns are drastically over represented in airsoft and this changes the character of the engagements. If you throw large amounts of ammo in to the mix, every submachine gunner can become a support gunner. Limiting the amount of ammo a submachine gunner carries on patrol is an attempt to limit that effect.

I am really bummed that I can't make this. Now that I know there is some local WWII interest here in Va., I am going to start working on load outs for my son and I. If you guys want to do a WWII milsim event this coming fall/winter at New Kent, let me know and I can work out a day/weekend there just for WWII. Have fun! Stg 44, is next on my airsoft gun wishlist!

Folks it's very important to support these events if we want this sport to grow. The more players we have the better these events will be.
I live in VA, and have been traveling the Northeast in pursuit of these games in order to show organizers that a critical mass of players will attend these events.
Without this support organizers as well as other's interest will not be sparked. If you are thinking about coming out for a great day, please make the effort.

Thanks to all of you who have signed up. I'm really looking forward to this!

I would love to help out the Axis side with some of my guys but I have two problems. It is 660 miles from where I live, which is not the end of the world, BUT more importantly, I will be traveling for my kids winter break starting the 17th. Would have been great to experience a new field with new players It is nice to see more WW2 games being held in Eastern locations I am sure it will be a huge success.

I placed an order for some stick grenades this week. Unfortunately Tactical Virtue was out of either the pull pin or striker pea grenades and won't have them back in stock until later this spring. Can the Allies handle the challenge?
The event is TWO WEEKS away. If you have any intentions of attending, please send in your registrations ASAP. I'm in the process of finalizing some things and last minute registrations make that more difficult. We still need more Germans and Volkssturm!

Player packets were just sent out to all registered players. If you didn't get one it means that 1)you are not registered or 2)the email address you sent me did not work.
If you are not registered and want to be, it is not too late! I will be leaving for the AO around mid-day on Friday, so I can take registrations up until Thursday night for those of you who wait until the last minute.

To: All Operation Cutlass Personnel From: HornetWSO, Commanding US Forces Subject: After Action Report for Combat Operation Conducted in Afton VA, 18 February, 2012
Operation Cutlass was a really great event. Tom B really did a nice job setting things up and running some really exciting scenarios. I have to say this was a first for me in two respects: This was the smallest Themed event I’ve attended and it will also be one of the most memorable ones too. All in all, anyone who attended will agree. The setting was in pine forest valley surrounded by steep draws, canyons, and fingers. It was 60 degrees in February, an absolute treat to be outdoors on a day like this. The terrain was brutal and breathtaking at the same time required conditioning. . . by the end of the day I was spent!
The first mission required the 101st to set out and patrol in enemy held terrain, in search of a British Paratrooper that jumped in the night before. After our squad was briefed, we set out to cover about ¼ mile of terrain as the crow flies, but in reality turned out to be two fingers and draws that needed to be traversed. These terrain features were significant and the slopes were steep. This took the better part of an hour. We ended on the end of ridgeline, and recovered our British Para. He was escorted from the DZ and returned to the 101st base camp. Recon elements from the 101st spotted enemy activity, which showed the enemy cutting across the valley floor and heading towards the 101st base camp. This intelligence arrived literally minutes before the Germans launched an aggressive assault to gain the ridge that the 101st occupied. After about 30 minutes of continued enemy attacks, the 101st still controlled the ridge.
After the 101st consolidated from the German attack, Battalion sent orders for the 101st to locate, close with, and destroy the enemy mortar positions located 400 yards to the southwest on a ridgeline overlooking US Staging areas. We moved to the base of a steep ridge that was covered in pine forest, much like the Hürtgen, we split our forces and sent half to extend around the right side of the ridge and sweep across from right to left for the enemy. The plan was to conduct a frontal assault from the base of the ridge, once the sweeping force came into contact with the Germans. This maneuver worked well. The Screaming Eagles, augmented by a Red Devil, assaulted the ridge, sweep the enemy, and blew up the mortar tube and ammunition crate with demolition charges. After the demolition charges were set, we withdrew from the ridge top.
Once the US withdrew to refit, rearm, and eat chow, the German forces once again assaulted US forces. The initial assault was repelled, but at high cost to the Americans. As the Germans pushed more re-enforcements into the battle, their numbers lead to the US base being overrun. US bodies were searched, and their personal effects were now souvenirs for the deutsche soldatens.
The Us forces were finally given the task to find the German command center for this Area of Operations, destroy the structure, and kill or capture all German soldiers defending this position. This complex was location about 500 yards to the west of the US line of departure. Aerial reconnaissance showed the German position located in a valley surrounded by steep walls. The US forces decided to attack from the top of the ridge and sweep down both walls of the valley to push the enemy from their command center. The US had an Assault Rocket Team armed with an M1A1 Bazooka, C02 powered, firing nerf vortex missiles to ranges of 300 feet. As the US closed to within 150 feet of the German bunker the Assault team launched two rockets to destroy the bunker. Resulting in an EndEx!
Conclusion: All in all a great day to be outdoors and conducting WWII airsoft operations. Although the numbers were low, the terrain, missions, and player conduct resulted in an exceptional experience. I hope others will take a chance and attend the next WWII event in Virginia.
