After seeing all these modern guys running very odd kits, I wondered if any GI's hag gotten creative with their issued items to make them a bit more ergonomic. I couldnt find vert much, and mostly just guys wearing the general issue items in random places, like the shovel where the bayonet goes on the haversack, canteen in the shovel location on the haversack, or wearing the haversack bookbag style not attached to the web belt.
I took it a step further and modified an old pistol belt smaller, to fit around my calf. I then took the remainder and attached a hook from an old canteen cover, so when attached to a regular belt, the section hangs vertically down the leg. I then made a loop on the lower end, and fed the shortened pistol belt through it.
With some adjusting, it all fit ver well! I attached a 3 cell thompson mag pouch to the front of my leg, and a leather pistol holster to the side of my leg. With some stretching i managed to hook the holster higher up on the vertical strap, and is in easy reach! It even helps hold the front of the web system down when the haversack or musette bag is full!
It was very easy to do with some scissors and cloth tape instead of restitching. I would guess it would be just as easy to do in the field for so genius young GI!
Ps. The donor belt and canteen pieces were old repros that were already falling apart, not original pieces! 0.o

Sounds like the same concept! Were they using issued items to make it work? Or rigger made items? I havnt heard of that before.

The cavalry holster for the .45 had an extension so it could more comfortably be worn when mounted. These holsters though uncommon would have been around especially for grizzled pre warNCOs and officers who werein the cavalry. Some of their pouches were also set up to flap a bit below the belt.

I saw those on emc militaria when I was looking for a holster, and almost bought one!
I know we definitely shouldnt look to video games for ww2 advice, but I did get the concept from the CoD World at War game. It was one of the Marine Raiders wearing a 30rnd thompson pouch around his mid thigh. I know it wasn't accurate, and I couldn't find any reference saying it happened, but I thought it was neat. I looked at it from the standpoint that, it wasn't something that was made in the factory and issued, but rather something a inganuative GI thought of and threw together using discarded pieces of general issue equipment. I remember one photo of a GI in the Ardenne using an empty K ration box as a muzzle cover when at rest. Similar concept but more practical.

Belgian and French SAS used to make drop leg holsters by putting officers webbing brace extenders on the belt unside down and suspending the pistol case from them. Basically drops the pistol case about eight inches lower on the belt.
Other than stuff you've photo evidence for units doing as a common practice i'd say *dont* do modernisms. There are enough awful impressions about as it is without encouraging people to be total farbs.

I absolutely agree that what could be worn and what should be worn are two different things. I don't condone anyone adding modernisms to their kit and saying its authentic because it 'could have' happened. I was hoping this would peak some interest, and to see if anyone had any more info or photo reference to web gear worn in odd and rare ways.
