Can anyone tell me what kind of helmet this is or even if it isn't WWII at all?

It looks sorta-kinda like a French WWI helmet.

As I'm delving more into the research of this thing I'm finding that it actually might be a real WWII Japanese helmet! The lining matches all of the picture on historical websites even though it's held together with a shoelace!

Wow, that's crazy! My girlfriend found it when she was over at he grandpa's cleaning out his barn! He was in the navy in WWII and worked on a minesweeper so I have no idea how he got it and apparently neither does he! I don't know if I should restore it or not!

Leave it be! The patina and aging thas has built up on it actually would add to the value of the piece. If its anything like coin collecting or many other antique collecting, the aging is everything to value!

Just from ebay buy-it-now prices, somewhere between $250 and $400. Those marked "vet bringback" reach astronomical prices, though (Lowest is $1,095).

I think the original liner does help though, i have seen some expensive ones in nice condition without the liner go for some high prices
