Hooray! Another Eastern Front plater lol. I had both, I miss my StG SOOOOOOOO much (broke after 2 years), only pain is magazines are a pain to find an no mid-caps, all version 2 parts, which is nice, great feeling and ergonomics. Had a PPSh by S&T, heavy heavy HEAVY, awesome looking, awesome EBB, bu the gearbox is totally awkward, FPS is SUPER low (probably because the low spring, easy to change) and the EBB, the drum that comes with it is awkward as well, though you don't NEED a new mag lol (rattles alot). Ergonomics are kinda hit or miss, I like them a bit, but the gun is REALLY uncomfortable to hold and your wrist will hurt alot after some use. If I could go back, would get another StG hands down (would even replace my MP40 if I could get mid-caps). Though I did look sick having a "vet pick up" but I dunno, wasn't my gun, didn't like the feel (like I LOVE M16's, but can't stand an AK kinda deal). Go with the StG better yet the MP40, I love mine to death after a few things upgraded here and there.

Ok thanks for the insight, I sold my mp40 because I normally in combat that's out of range for my mp40.

Yeah a Stg, with a tight bore would have the range of a rifle, but still be a manouverable gun like a smg.

My agm mp44 has a tight bore fitted, I can regularly engage at 80m and give snipers a run for their money. As brownien said, it can also work in CQC but its still 9 pounds and fairly unwieldy. Short of a K98, this is your best "ranged" choice, however.
the S&T PPSH I have came from the ASGI boneyard, and is quite handy at short range owing to its size and ergonomics. I haven't got a chance to range test beyond 40m, but i'd imagine it would be slightly better than the mp40 due to a tad more barrel length. Since you sold your mp40 due to range troubles, I doubt the ppsh would be much improvement.
It ultimately depends on the era of your eastern front impression. The mp44 would be Flaggrantly Wrong for early war, but the ppsh would not.

Plus too, a stg would work for eastern front, and would be less Flaggrantly Wrong for a western front crossover impression.

The AGM Stg44 is a very nice gun. Very sturdy and fires decent out of the box. The MP44's design also isn't 100% accurate to the original the trigger guard is too small and the pistol grip isn't correct either.
The PPSH41 is definitely a better made gun externally. Its full steel and wood compared to the AGM MP44 which is mostly pot metal. It doesn't shoot as well as the MP44 out of the box. However the S&T's internals are full upgradable though.
I'd go with whichever you like better.
