Shifty makes a good point about ebay. A great resource but be careful. I have started a whole new thread with thoughts about how to get bargains on ebay and avoid paying too much. Let's keep this thread about stand ins.

speaking of stand ins. I am a fan of the " GI " pseudo wool shirts which look fine (in my opinion) are far more comfortable then wool, do not require dry cleaning, are way way less expensive and available in larger sizes. Capn Zak on this site used to sell them and they are great. Like everything discussed here they are of course nit the ideal but make acceptable stand ins.

Stand In's, doesn't that really come down as to what is acceptable to the event organizer and not so much personal preference? If an organizer has an event where they want 90%+ authenticity a participant should only go if they can fill the requirement. When I attend an event where full kit is expected I am disappointed when 2 or 3 show up wearing smocks and cargo pants with hiking boots or whatever. No different than going to a Halloween costume party where there's a dude with 3 days growth wearing a construction hat. Or some dude attending a wedding wearing jeans.
Same goes for a WWII themed event where there are ample substitutions allowed...Don't complain about the kits being incomplete etc. etc. There's room for both types of events. Asking someone to have full basic kit for their 1st, 2nd or 3rd event isn't realistic. Expecting people that have invested much time and money in their kit to religiously attend basic themed events isn't realistic either (provided they aren't the only guy for a hundred miles...then you take what you can get I guess).
But in regards to stand ins I have seen plenty of items that fit the bill. Seen GAP jackets that looked like M41 or M43 jackets. Wool overcoats in green and grey. Wool / cotton shirts that look very "GI". A lot of it isn't terribly distracting. Much better that someone in black coveralls running around with an AK-47.

Alot can be camouflaged with web gear and leggings. There are almost always $4.00 low quarter suade or smooth leather, rounded toe shoes at thrift shop that once under leggings or covered with some German spats look quite passable to all but the most discerning eyes. Certainly not the ideal and a goal to improve for the player who comes with them. In my opinion a reasonable stand in.
The GAP m43 jacket frankly cost as much as a real jacket and nearly as much as a good quality repo, but I suppose if a fellow already had it, they do look fine under web gear.
