I would like to start off saying that this was a fantastic event, and I couldn't have done it withou the support of everyone in attendance! Everyone there brought a little something different to add to the event in so many different ways! Thank you all!
My AAR will cover the combat involvement of the US Army forces in that sector.
Beginning on Sat, fresh troops arrived behind the lines. After getting these few reinforcements equipped and loaded up, the local officer in charge of overseeing the troops in that sector grouped everyone up to brief before moving out to the line. "The Krauts have been very quiet in this sector, don't expect too much action. But we will use the downtime to help orientate you new guys and give you vets a bit of R&R."
After 'retraining' the fresh recruits with the proper combat tactics that have been proven on the front, the captain placed the squad under the control of the division's Item Company Lt. who led them on a patrol to the front lines. After pushing up to the CP and checking in, the squad pushed up to the forward CP to establish a defensive position and relaxed posture. I (as the squad leader) got a call on the horn from Fox Company, letting me know they were sending over a veteran Corporal, to help establish a base of fire, if need be. After his arrival, the scout in the group reported some German movement out to our 2 O' clock. It turned out to be an opposing German squad, scouting out the movement of a much larger German advance! I then gave the order to hold fast until they approached our positions. After taking out a few in the enemy squad, we were forced to pull back to our established regrouping zone. In the process, we lost contact with our veteran tommy gunner, and we pushed back forward to link back up with him. On our way back up to him, we made contact with him, along with a large group of Germans occupying our previous positions!
We then set up to try and take back our forward CP, but that's when SHTF! I sent out our scout to our right flank to find targets, while our smg gunner took the left flank to act as a feigning push that side. The rest of our squad was to push through the woods center and bottle the Krauts in the shack at that location. Upon moving out, our smg gunner was hit, along with myself not long after. The squad medic arrived soon after to help us back into the fight, but he was also hit by fire from a large German push on the left flank. The squad 2nd in command then ordered all remaining troops to drop back to the CP and regroup with the 'reinforcements'. Once regrouped, we attempted to move out again, but by that time, the main assault of the German assault was on top of our position! We layed in wait for them to approach our ambush. We opened up, hitting several enemy troops, but we were out numbered and out gunned. A couple potato mashers were tossed followed by a rush of enemy troops, taking our position.
After reporting to Overlord on the German Attack, the area CO briefed us on a scouting mission to make contact on Baker Company. Overlord had lost contact with Baker, and we wre tasked with finding and reporting on their status, and possibly to reinforce them.
15mins after moving out, we made contact with a small German squad, that seemed to have been lost. We moved up to take offensive positions along their path of advance and our smg gunner effectively halted them, while hitting 2 or 3. I moved up our right flank to support his movement, while the rest of the squad have covering fire from the center. I spotted the German Sani moving up to revive one of his comrades, and I moved into position to ambush. After he moved into range of my carbine, I opened fire, only to get pinned by his mp40 fire. I attempted to move to his left flank to catch him off guard and a lucky shot from my carbine found his hand. I then regrouped with my squad at the road and ordered to push the attack. Having only a few in their squad left, the remaining Krauts opted to retreat, allowing us to advance to the last known position of Baker Company, who were nowhere to be seen.
Report on Sunday's AAR coming soon!
