i'm sure most of you have discovered these but f not, go to You Tube and bring up some of the cheesy but insightful infantry training videos from the arcives. These black and white, short films were produced by the War Department and used to train and indoctrinate soldiers. They combine information with propaganda and frankly the grim realties of the time. Of particular interest are films like Why we fight, Kill or be Killed, Infantry weapons, comparisons of German Weapons and ours and so on. Since the soldiers you are portraying viewed many if not most of these films it's a good idea for you to do so as well.

Thanks! I've seen some of them... the one that boldly lies to GIs about how the MG42's "bark is worse than its bite" is particularly entertaining.
There are also some very interesting German training films out there too!

Indeed, " don't be intimidated. By its high rate of fire...". Hearing the different sounds each gun makes was very cool. I really hope the day comes when airsoft guns have amplified enhanced and more authentic reports. Obviously not as loud as real guns but perhaps twice the decibles they no produce. Wouldn't it be cool if we could identify weapons by their audio reports? You could tell (as was done) which side in a distant fire fight was getting the upper hand.

I have a muzzle flash on my grease gun, my M1919A6 (even though that was a post war mod) and also my gbb carbine and all are considerably louder which is cool. For my homebuilt BARs i added a muzzle section up front (over and beyond the M14 flash hider) for looks and that too adds some decibles and intimidation.
