Hi all I've always had in mind creating a WW2-short, but lacking any good ideas. Ssg Joe's recent post made me aware I can just ask around here! So I'm wondering, what story could make a nice, short WW2-film? There are some criterias however. I'd like it to be built around the fact that it's low budget. I.e. no contstructing buildings or similar. CGI-effects for explosions are fine. I have access to professional CGI for little money. I also have acess to vehicles (German motorcycle, beetle staff car, GMC truck, Weasel, SAS Jeep, etc.) as well as the standard uniforms. Heck, even horses are somewhat available. As for productiongear, I got professional film gear. I work as a photographer and do film as a "spare time" activity. So no worry. So yeah. I just wanna brainstorm ideas. Come'on! Hit me! Kind regards

I kinda think this is something you'll have to determine on your own because of so many variables such as your location, props, actors, etc.

Alright, here's an idea I had but you can take it if you want.
A single Ukrainian mother is trying to get prepared for the upcoming winter she's getting food and firewood all ready. A squad of Russians come and rest near the house for a little while. A couple of the guys go to help her out with her chores. They help for a little while, but their squad leader comes over and informs them that they don't have much time and must move on. The Russians decide to take a little firewood with them too, informing her that she is doing a service for her country. A few days later, she is continuing working on her stockpile. A German squad comes by. The whole squad stops to help her stockpile, and they all have light conversation. But another squad comes by and forcefully tells the squad that is helping the woman that they can't stop to help. They take some firewood and food from her, despite her protests. They give her a slip that promises that the Germans will reimburse for everything she gives them. A few days later, she is doing the same task she was doing the last few days, but she seems very hopeless. She continues to do her jobs, and a group of partisans come by. They announce that they will be searching her house for any Germans and they won't do anything more than that, unless she is helping the Germans. They check the house, and are satisfied to find nothing that suggests she helped the Germans. But they decide to search her, and upon searching her they find the slip the Germans gave her. They decide to kill her, but because if her protests and children, they spare her but completely ransack her house instead saying that "the winter will kill her". The next day, she is distraught. She is sitting outside hopeless. An old man comes by. He talks with her and takes pity on her predicament. He informs her that his wife was killed a few weeks ago by a Russian sniper during a fight between the Russians and Germans. He offers her to take her and her kids to his house and take care of them as he has an ample amount of resources. She accepts, and they all live happily ever after. The end.

It's supposed to be similar to the parable of the Good Samiratin (not sure if I spelled that right).

The link between a soldier and home is powerful regardless of the country they fight for. Mail call is a universally compelling aspect of military life. Every soldier in combat relishes the letters from home and most ask friends to deliver a pre written note with final thoughts should the need rise. I think a short film that could effectively capture that commonality could be quite powerful.

I've been thinning of doing something like that instead. Maybe you could have the soldier wrote letters that he can't send out, but will bring home for his family to read. Kinda like what the character in Windtalkers was doing.

You could do a film about you as a German, alone and running away from the enemy after an attack or ambush that took many of your men.The film could focus on the paranoia of "Are they close?","Did I outrun them?",or "Am I being watched?".You try desperately to find your lines but the constant rush and fear is overwhelming and you feel hampered and paranoid. There are similar videos I've seen of that but you can add a good twist or plot to it.

Thanks for the great ideas guys. Especially SsgJoe! Altough your idea would require more work than I'm willing to do in terms of casting and location. Luftwelle, that's just what I needed. I always had my mind down something along that path - but couldn't just put my finger on it so to speak. I'll try to mash up a script around that idea!
Would it be of interest to follow the production? I can surely make a small "blog" here...

I would love if you did that. I might do something like that also.
