Had the opportunity to view your little proxy war in Vietnam from the other side, growing up. The Soviets were content to bleed the military strength of the United States with an Asian land war, while funding the "homefront" war via the KGB. What, you thought that Kerry's VVAW was funded by Americans? Good luck with that, comrades. The First Chief Directorate was instrumental in creating the "war criminal" mythos that tied your idealistic (but not terribly bright) citizenry into knots, and this made the efforts of the Committee in terms of espionage much, much easier.
The truth of the matter is, the operations against the Main Enemy were so successful that, even today, the effects are taught in American schools as fact, rather than the myths that they truly were.

America does not have a monopoly on abandoning former allies but there is a pretty constant recent record of bugging out of conflicts we shouldn't have gotten into. I suspect there will be two more notches for our gun stocks shortly. Nam is an easy call as a mistake looking back, but the Domino Theory seemed quite real and since South Vietnam had an anti communist product to sell we bought it willingly. Our costs for that was quite high but the cost paid by our loyal allies when we left was much much higher. How many friends in Iraq and Afghanistan will be left behind and executed by our enemies when we leave? How many already have?
The real tragedy of the wars in the middle east is the outcomes were so predictably bad. We should not have leaders who have never served. Bravado is so easy for folks on the sidelines.
