There are some fabulous replica German potato masher grenades out there, with prices that reflect their authenticity. Unfortunately too expensive for me to buy in big numbers and way too expensive to throw at events. Grenades really made a difference in close combat and similarly are stalemate breakers at airsoft events. They also look cool in belts, boots and hanging from web gear. The US has options for lots of inexpensive, decent looking grenades that are cheap enough to throw. (The GnG pineapple Bb holder is especially nice for about $5.00 each and safe to throw, but not so for the Krauts. I noticed some nice home made German grenades at the Battle of the Bulge events. Not perfect by any means but quite adequate. They consisted of spray paint caps with a dowel stuck in them and held in place with resin paste or expandable foam. to further the illusion an appropriate size metal cap was attached to the base of the dowel like the type removed from lindseed oil or kerosean cans. Painted up they looked pretty darn good.
I set about making some as I had tons of spray paint caps about and decent sized dowel pieces Initially I was going to leave the dowels without contours as I don't have a lathe. instead I took my most powerful drill and imbedded a bit flush into the dowel end then with a heavy leather glove and heavy grit sand paper quickly got an appropriate shape going. In no time I had a dozen Potato mashers! Are they perfect? Heck no! Can I throw them away without worrying about recovering them? absolutely!
