Hello, I am planning on doing an m14 to m1 conversion, so looking at the other threads, I found what I need. But after looking up the barrel assembly, I found that they were quite expensive. Is there an alternative to these, or can I or a machine shop make one, or have I not been looking hard enough? Thanks in advance.

If you are using a complete M14 it will provide both the inner and outer barrel required for this conversion. Trying to purchase the needed individual M14 parts required. (receiver group, bolt, trigger assembly, stock, gearbox, hopup assembly and barrels) will be prohibitively expensive.

I think I might have said it wrong. I am talking about the thing on the garand barrel that has the gas cylinder and front sight. Are they called a gas assembly?

Yes, it is. You can make your own out of tubing that's the right size and some resin paste to build it up-there's a thread on here somewhere about that.

Sorry for being annoying, but can anyone post the link to that thread about creating a barrel assembly?

The gas assembly itself including the locking lug, locking nut, stacking swivel and front site typically runs $50.00 to $75.00 (plus shipping) Using the actual part is the ideal but fabricating your own parts is not that hard especially if you use an actual front site, and locking lug. With some labor equity you can wind up with good results.

I would like to buy one as these would probably be more durable.

Gun shows remains the cheapest source I have found. I specifically get ones that are out of spec hence not ideal for an actual M1. They also periodically show up reasonably priced on Ebay but they usually soar to stupid prices.
If you want me to check some local sources I could probably score a complete assembly for $75.00 or less.
