My recommendation for leather items is to use neatsfoot oil, which both darkens any brown leather and is good for the leather as well. For rough spots use a very light sand paper and apply the oil afterwards. For canvas items, try splashing coffee on them to give brown stains. For black/dark stains, get some black pastels, take a knife and shave off a fine powder into a cup or bowl. Use your fingers to apply the powder. Once satisfied dunk them into some water and scrub with your fingers.
For uniforms, one method that I have used outside the pastels, that is very risky but can give good results, is to use dye through a mist bottle. I mix a very small amount of black leather dye to water, and use a mister to apply it to the uniform. It takes patience and lots of applications, but it can give good results. The key is to use many light coats. I can post pictures if you would like to see them.

Wool tunics and pants - This is tricky but it works. Carefully burn a few spots on your uniform. The brown marks will look like dirt and it is permanent, obviously. Just don't overdo it or you'll be buying a new tunic or worse, starting a fire. Try pressing a hot metal bar where you want the marks and take it off when the wool begins to smolder. Try a small area first until you get the hang of it.
