Like my profile picture suggests I'm working on an 82nd Airborne loadout, and I'm wondering what kind of thing paratroopers would most commonly fill their pockets with other than extra ammo and C-Rations. Right now my M42 pockets are filled with just socks and crumpeled up paper for looks, but I'd like to fill them with more accurate items.

Take a look at this footlocker guide. www.hardscrabblefarm.com/ww2/footlocker-reed.htmAt least some of this would be carried into combat. A book, socks, lighter/matches, toilet paper, toothbrush, picture of your wife or girlfriend, etc. The list literally goes on forever. If it was small and light, and existed in the 1940s (and was available to servicemen), someone probably carried one at some point in combat (especially early on before they learned to travel light.
