Was it common for troopers to carry 1911's and if so during which stages of the war? I saw somewhere that most were issued them for D-Day but not afterwards and use declined, does this mean having one for market garden or the battle of the bulge would be uncommon? Also I've seen hip and shoulder holsters in use was this just based on individual preference?

Pistols were very commonplace among frontline airborne troopers. The most common of course being the issued 1911. Private purchase pistols were also present throughout the war. Holster types depended on personal preference and availability. Shoulder holsters or hip holsters would both be fine although the hip holster was more common.
