I enjoy the Discovery Channel's science show "myth busters" as they methodically explore questions and misunderstandings and common beliefs. They explore the psychology and physics of things and especially seem to enjoy fire, explosions, swords and ballistics. Recently they tested the theory that even fairly close to an exploding grenade you're safe if you lay flat. The theory being that the shrapnel fly's UP and out. They tested both WW2 pineapple grenades an modern M26 grenades. They tested for shock lethality as well using burst pressure gauges at assorted distances away from the grenade.
Later they circled the bursting grenades with a ring of plywood panels with the bottom foot high layer indicating a prone victim. The results to me were not surprising. It's NOT good to be near an exploding grenade. Lots of shrapnel (especially with the modern grenade) penetrated the panel all around even in the bottom foot of exposure. Fatal injuries just from the shock extended out five feet. They WAS noticeably less shrapnel one foot in height and below but still plenty of holes to kill or seriously seriously wound anyone even in the prone. Anyone standing up is totally shredded.
For airsoft the typical "anyone within 10 feet" of a grenade is "out" is quite conservative but given that we have limited range with our guns and in the heat of the action hard to estimate distances it S probably a decent rule...Might add the caveat to extend that to a car length away if you.re still standing when the grenade comes to stop or goes off.
