Here's a short little video of the infamous Chauchat light machine gun being fired. The Chauchat has a somewhat unfair reputation as the "worst LMG ever made." That reputation comes mostly from quality control issues, a major technical mistake when they adapted it to the .30-06 (they chamber dimensions were wrong), and the open-sided magazine which was a terrible idea in the trenches. But something like 250,000 Chauchats were made, they continued to be used after the war by a number of smaller countries. Finland still had some in their inventory during the Winter War, though they probably didn't see use. Copies were made in a number of countries, including China, and the Germans even converted some captured Chauchats to 7.92mm and used them.
The close ups demonstrate how the weapon works very well. It's a long recoil design, which may have been influenced by the Remington Model 8, designed by John Browning. The bolt locks into a barrel extension. Recoil sends bolt the bolt and barrel rearward. The bolt is unlocked, the barrel returns forward, the bolt is released, picks up chambers and fires the next cartridge, and the cycle repeats. Recoil seems to be a bit pronounced and all that moving mass doesn't help accuracy, but it was intended as a burst weapon for delivering suppressive fire.
Dracul: It looks like it lost a lot of steam and I now feel bad for randomly dropping off.

stuka: I mean it's not your fault. It is interesting though that things are falling off as we are finally getting our ww2 guns with the type 38/96 and the enfield as well as it recieving a new loading system, it's kind of unfortunate

Dracul: I don't know, maybe its because all the guns are becoming available, there is a decreasing need for the forums.

Dracul: Most of the talk was about making guns, as all the uniform info was already out there, but now the weapons are out there and are usually decent quality.

savoy6: anyone know if anyone still carries the enfield?

Dracul: I think Redwolf has a Enfield. If not or not longer, then not until G&G releases theirs. The old gas Iron Airsoft brand SMLE isn't carried by anyone anymore and was such piece of crap. Not worth trying to track one down.
