Okay so out of the G&G, Marushin, and PPS K98s, which one is the best? And why!

I would go for a PPS Kar98. Performance-wise it is very similar to the G&G, but it is cheaper and known to have adjustable power via a screw in the bolt. A G&G Kar98 is also a very good option if you can find one for a good price. A Marushin Kar98 looks cool but is absolutely useless for skirmishing- have fun looking for your $5 shells it spits into the tall grass.

And how easy are hop modifications? Is it VSR compatible by any chance?

Red gas I believe is illegal in the United States because it destroys the ozone layer like there's no tomorrow. A PPS Kar98 can handle green gas no problem, and IIRC the hop bucking and inner barrel are VSR compatible. The G&G and Marushin cannot boast that compatibility, though both can also use green gas.

PPS it is. I live in the UK so luckily red gas isn't a problem. My other problem would by scope compatibility. I'm a purist but I don't fancy using the 1.5x zoom scope that I theoretically should do. Don't suppose there are any mounts or alternatives?

That I don't know, I imagine you can always drill and tap the receiver, but honestly, at airsoft ranges, scopes rarely do anything more than look cool.

Which K98?

PPS seems to be a hit or miss. They are said to be Tanaka compatible. G&G is thought to be more consistent. Yet - both are gas. G&g green gas mags come with 2 powers - high in arround 140 m/s and low at about 110-115 m/s. From 3 mags I received 1 high power and 2 low power. No idea why. Zf41 from G&g is not a snug fit on a Tanaka receiver (so I assume the same for PPS)but will hang on. It is clear enough but with a very narrow field - from my point it is useless, but looks cool. Any periodical correct mount will cost in about 150-200 EU and will require wholes in the receiver. In EU you can get a DDR post war scope 4x that looks similar to a ZF 39 and be much better than standard airsoft grade. I am using one on a M24- K98 conversion (that has rails) and I recomed if you can get one.
