My wife and I just watched Peter Jacksons amazing and haunting documentary on WW1 British Infantry in WW1. He was asked by the WAR Museum in conjunction with the BBC to dos something with 100 hours of archival film from WW1. With his resources and talented team he spent 5 years remastering, brilliantly colorizing and adapting film speed to create footage that looks like Speilberg was on site 100 years ago to shoot it. He created incredible soundtracks, played testimonial remarks from dozens upon dozens of veteran recollections recorded back in the 60s and pieced it together into an open ncredible look at the horrors of that time and place. The fear and humanity exposed as you look into the eyes of men who in many cases were most likely dead or brutalky aounded within hours of when the film was shot continhes to haunt me. As you look into the faces and see the false bravado you see that many of them are fulky aware of the likelihood of their pending death.
This is the most powerful and effective military documentary I have ever seen. If you are a history buff you have to see it.

I saw that this afternoon. Very well done. They did an amazing job restoring and colorizing the film.

The faces are hauntingly contemporary. The film looks like it was shot by Spielberg and the story telling is wonderful.

One thing I couldn't help noticing was how many had really bad teeth. I guess that happens when you use your tooth brush for cleaning buttons. And breakfast: bread, jam (apple and plum) and a rasher of bacon. I suspect a nice plate of SOS would look pretty good after a few weeks of that. What I found really sad was that there was no planning for what to do with the soldiers when the war ended. Here's your discharge. Goodbye. The US WWII GI Bill was one of the most brilliant innovations in history.

The GI bill and the Marshal plan for rebuilding Europe were both forward thinking concelts that benefitted America brilliantly.
