Since you all did so well on the military parlance quiz how will you do recognizing US Armynicknames. Some are easier then others. Respond with your answers and let's see how you do?
Here you go:
The All Americans Old Ironsides The Rail Splitters The Blue and Grey Queen of Battle The Screaming Eagles Big Red 1 Ivy Division Go For Broke Hell on Wheels Darby's Boys The Varsity Indianhead King of Battle The Thunderbird Spearhead First Force The Tough Ombres The Golden Lion Bloody Bucket

A total guess, but I'm guessing Queen of battle is Infantry, King of battle is Artillery and the varsity is military police?

All answers above are correct except the guess on the Varsity. The 9th Infantry Division was known as the Varsity up until the Vietnam war when it was called the "psychedilic cookie" The 28th was indeed the Bloody bucket and was also known as the Keystone Division. The Queen of battle is indeed the Infantry and the King of battle is the Artillery. The first Force was a combined element of US specialized mountain troops with the Canadians that fought in Italy. "Hells Brigade". "Darbys boys" referred to all the WW2 Rangers.
Good job everyone.

I know Darby's Rangers was the 1st Ranger BN. I've never heard Draby's 'Boys' before......
I am excited, though as I found out that my unit has a standing invite to all the WW2 ranger association reunions!! I wont make it this year, but I will be there in '07....

I go to the Ranger rendevous about every five years or so. It's always a great time. Fewer and fewer of my contemporaries making it but always some great surprises from guys that have never made it to the event and folks I haven't seen in 25 plus years! I ran into a guy from my Battalion (2nd) in Georgia at a Lexus conference who I hadn't seen since 1976! I couldn't get over how old he looked! I'm sure he's thinking the same. He left the battalion to serve on an alternate jump demonstration team (Supporting the Golden Knights during the bicentennial) and made over 500 jumps in 1976.
I think he shrunk a couple inches!
Darby was the father of WW2 (hence modern) Rangers

I've got a picture of the WW2 rangers - from all battalions - at the last reunion ( I cant share it though) and it really surprised me how few are left. We need to give them (and the WW1 vets) hte thanks and the credit they deserve before its too late.....

Pontious Pilates Bodyguard was 1st Foot -Royal Scots, continuing the nicknames thread the name 'The Black Watch' was originally the 'nickname' well insult really given to the Highland Independant Companies who were regimented into the 43rd and then later 42nd Foot (Royal Highland Regiment) as it was an insult at the time the troops took it into use as a badge of honour-just as the Paras did with the 'Red Devils' (Rot Teufel) tag when facing Hermann in Tunisia...

Hey Gadge! can you list the units to those nicknames? Mine is "Breakthrough" 4th Armored and I was one of the "All Americans" Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane? Because there is no such thing! Nice to know you can if you have to. Can you trust anyone else in control of your life? Hey I don't have to park the damn things after they land! if they land!

A common joke amongst my reenacting unit and the 101st units is they call us Alcoholics Anonymous, with which we reply with the WWII response, "Hey, whats that eagle screamin' for?" ;D

Sure can: Booties = Royal Marines (also called Royals (never 'marines' they view that as an insult), stems form an old navy nickname of 'bootnecks' peoples cav = 1RTR (royal tank regiment) also called 'chav cav' mostly because in the british army the cavalry is still heavily staffed by landed gentlemen and public schoolboys, the tank regiment recruited 'problem officers' and those form poorer backgrounds in the 1st world war. For reference its nealry impossible to get commisioned into something like the blues and royals as an officer if you dont have a fmaily wiht good connections and a lot of money - 1RTR wold take you though buffs = Royal East kent Regiment, so called because they used to have a buff coloured facing to their redcoats. cherry bums = 11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own)…'Lord Cardigan's Bloodhound's' (from their colonel.) 'The Cherry-Pickers' 'The Cherubims' or 'Cherry Bums' (from tight crimson pantaloons and overalls in full dress) Woofers = Sherwood and Worscestershire (pronounced 'wustershire') Forresters. Woofers again is a name we all call them but not to their faces if you like your teeth. Green slimes = Intelligence corp because their berets are the colour of slime. Scaleybacks = signalscomes from WW2 radio operators who had scaley backs from leaking battery acid in their back packs And the RMP (royal military police) are usually referred to with a single nickname thats slnag for female genitalia and begins wiht C as everyone hates them because they are jumped up idiots who get a free rank which no one respects.
