I was just watching TV and I came across the trailer for a new movie coming out called, "FlyBoys." It actually looks very good, even though it is about the French... But it looks worth seeing. It is about I think French pilots during World War One, but I could be wrong. Maybe American volunteer, but the effects look amazing.

when I was a kid I was a big fan of a movie called "Von Richtofen and Brown", about the life of the Red Baron and the Canadian pilot who finally shot him down. I loved the old biplanes and triplanes and the old school flight uniforms. Looks like this is gonna be good too.

Saw this on opening night. Overall just OK. Acting was somewhat poor, Story was somewhat poor. Great aerial combat scenes. Mostly realistic tactics but not always. Anyone remember the original Battlestar Galactica when Starbuck or Apollo had a Cylon on their 6 all they had to do was hit the turbo reverse button and the cylons would fly past them and look around their cockpit totally bewildered then got blown to bits? Well apparently that was a real WWI tactic. Just close your throttle and pull up into a stall and your enemy will fly right under you. and if your lucky your landing gear will tear the top wing off their Fokker triplane but don't worry, The Neuport can easily withstand such a collision Schmitty

Yikes! Sounds like it bridged the gaps of credibility which often seems to happen in Hollywood war films. A shame as the factual tactics and events can be every bit as fascinating. I always associated the term "Flyboys" with WW2 not WW1 but i suppose it could have originated in WW1.
Schmitty understands flight characteristics quite well so he'd be a fair judge of how believable the movie was. At one of our local events he deliberately flew a very large remote control styrofoam aircraft over our full contingent of players (probably 30 guys) and we were tasked with shooting it down with airsoft guns. He completed numerous low level sweeps before everyone figured out the key to ground fire is to create a wall of BBs the plane flys into. Once that was done the plane received massive amounts of addditonal weight in the form off stuck in BBs and Schmitty had to fight the lack of balance with his controls. The plane progressively slowed and became less and less responsive. Finally the tail elevation control was shot out and the plane came down.
Schmitty in addition to all his other talents is a very, very gifted RC plane pilot. Just some of the cool things you're missing by not living in the NW?

I agree with schmitty on the OK part. The aerial seens were awesome, but like he said, the acting was at times, kinda cheesey.
I have a question though, when was the 'nitrous-boost' introduced into airplanes?

N2o boost was used in WWII but I have never heard of it being used in WWI. Was that in the movie? I don't remember that. John (2nd bat) thanks for your high praise of my flying skills, I used to have a private pilot license but have not kept it current. It was amazing how many BB's it took to bring down the drone plane at the Carentan event. Here is a pic: www.battlesim.com/carentanphotos/target69.html If you look carefully you can see the BB's in the air. The plane looked like swiss cheese by the time it came down. This was a $3 free flight glider converted to RC just for this purpose. Schmitty

It was amazing how many hits it took. Thanks for including the picture. For those who can't tell it was a large foam plane and folks got on line and shot at it as Schmitty brought it around for a "straffing" run. It was enormously fun. You could hear the ca tak ca tak ca tak of hits on the foam. I am still amazed we didn't have a Dick Cheney incident with all the folks and wild firing. Lots of rounds expended. I noticed alot of folks batteries gave out during the last combat phase following the airplane shoot down! Fun fun time and a cool, between mission phase, activity.
