Any opinions on this 1983 Michael Mann directed WW2 movie? I personally love the visual style that was used as well as the German equipment and uniforms. I also appreciate the heavy use of splinter camo zeltbahns (up until this film, I cannot remember any other movie or tv show that had German soldiers wearing zelts). For you younger posters out there, The Keep is about a group of Nazis sent to Romania to guard a mountain pass from allied patrols. There happens to be an enormous keep (fortress) where they set up base camp and a couple troops are soon killed by a mysterious force. The SS arrives and begins exterminating villagers (blaming them for the death of the soldiers). The entity that kills the soldiers does so by draining the life-force from them (ala Raiders Of The Lost Ark) and burning them into the walls (literally). There is some great gear on display as well as black SS uniforms galore. Very gothic movie. I managed to get a widescreen laserdisc-to-dvd bootleg years ago from Ebay and recommend this movie to WW2 German fans. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieNsNjrsye4

I remember seeing this movie back when it was new and being a little bored with it. As I recall the plot moves along very slowly. But the pictures you posted sure look good, looks worth checking out again.

It is slow paced and very artsy. It was intended to be an "Adult Fairytale" according to director Michael Mann (Heat). It's also one of the most gothic movies ever made. The original cut was almost 3 hours long and Paramount studios cut the special f/x budget and hacked it to 96 minutes. Apparently a "Director's Cut" is in the works for DVD. The book by F Paul Wilson was very popular. Here's a pic of Molosar (the embodiment of evil), the creature that is locked away in The Keep.
