I've seen this movie alot of times before. I did notice one thing that struck me odd. One scene when the group is going into town, they ALL carried Thompsons! I don't believe that would have happened(do correct me tho) but some if not most had 30rd mags in the 5 cell 20rd mag pouches.
Does anyone know if this group existed? And would have troops used the 30rd mags in the 20rd pouches?

The movie is quite loosely based on facts. It depicts the First Special Service Force of Canadians and US combined into a sort of commando/ mountain brigade. The group recruited loggesr, skiers, mountain climbers and general outdoorsmen into an elite Alpine force. They originally trained for the Aleutians but when that quickly became a non issue they were to be disbanded. As depicted in the movie their charismatic leader pleaded their case and they were sent to Italy to fight in the mountains there where they performed exceptionally well.
In the movie the Canadians and US soldiers were shown to have had huge quarrels and bar fights during their early training but that was just hollywood fabrication. They actually got along pretty well. They did have some bar fights with town locals on occassion however.
Their patch is a red arrow head with white lettering. An original is quite valuable.
