Greetings all, this is Todd Meyer, the event organizer for Airsoft Battle Zone's Nostromo and Freefall series (www.freefallgame.com, http://www.airsoftbattlezone.com.) Those of you who go to Codename: Thunder might know me as "Moose" or "The General" from the Cartel's BA-64 Russian Armored Car crew.
Anyway, our group maintains a private field near Neillsville, WI, about an hour east of Eau Claire. We have run WWI & WWII Ostfront reenactment events on this field for years - it has machinegun nests, a small village, trails for scout cars, a couple of derelict jeeps, a fuel dump, open and wooded areas, and even a downed German scout plane! Our group, in conjuction with Airsoft Battle Zone of Eau Claire, would like to start running WWII airsoft events here as well.
First off, are there enough people interested in driving to Neillsville to make an event this October feasible? Secondly, does anyone (besides us) do Red Army, or would this have to be a GI vs. Wehrmacht-type event?

Hello gryphon, are you the prisoner I kicked to the ground in Antigo? I liked (no, really liked) your BA-64. Both my brother and I would be very interested in an event in Neilsville. I believe that another member of the 9th SS would probably go too, but can't say it for him in this thread. Your site sounds very nice. Please let the ersatz brothers know more details and we'll confirm then. As for it being a G.I. vs wehrmacht event, I don't know. Why don't you see the numbers and then tailor the event. Heck, do an imaginary meeting of the Russians and the U.S. meeting at the Elbe and trapping the german remnants in a final battle of sorts. That way, you can fit in the BA-64.

Pictures of the field if as impressive as it sounds would probally go along way to attract national interest amongst us here. Details on weapons and uniform requirements will also help people get off the fence. I would ask that if a national event it be at least 75% complete airsoft impression. Meaning Correct Smock or tunic hat/helmet pants webgear and perhaps a correct period weapon. KnickKnacks may not be so tuff on but the basics should be covered for a national event. Also there seems to be a WW2AA sponsored national event in Oct. Perhaps in the spring when WI thaws?

I'm free for the first two weekends in October! The site sounds great! Any idea on when you'll be picking a tentative date? I'd recommend staking a date sooner than later so that married types like myself can reserve the time.
Thanks!

As a fellow Wisconsinite, I am thrilled at the prospect of any event occurring in this state. Based on the date and what I have going on at that time, I would attend. You can definitely rule out anything from late October to late February, as I sign my soul over to the hockey team at that time and nothing else exists. Beyond that, the drive is only two hours and would be quite manageable in my opinion.

Yes, I too am interested as I am in any event near or far. I will have time in October. I think I know you Gryphon but I am not sure and won't give you away. Like unionman said, the sooner you nail down dates the better. Then we can start a list of attendees.

Perhaps we can better organize this event, so that it does not coincide with an already announced event here in the midwest? Thanks!

Sorry, Russian, didn't mean to step on toes, just floating the idea to see if there was any interest.
Actually, holding a big event in the spring might be the better idea. What do you all think, late April? Early May? If nothing else, that would give us time to toss up an event webpage so people could see if it was worth the drive, as well as get our current project, a M1910 Maxim AEG on a Sokolov mount, up and running. I could probably also finish the wife's Mosin-Nagant sniper rifle conversion in time. Maybe I'd even have my PPSh41 conversion ready by then. Hey, a guy can dream....
We had in mind a minimum 75% authenticity standard, two-day scenario event using WW2AA rules. Set in Belorussia, with Wehrmacht, SS, Red Army, and Belorus Partisan units. Civilian NPCs in the village, clogging the roads with their pushcarts and hiding their turnips from the Fascists and suchlike. Period-style non-tracked vehicles would be allowed, if the field's not too wet.
If any local units want to come do a one-day skirmish at our field some weekend in October, to scout it out and report back here, please PM me and we'll set it up.

Hey Gryphon, no worries. As you can see by my forum name, I am actually very excited at the prospect of an Ostfront game! The October event Frank and I are planning was originaly going to be an Ost Front theme, but lack of organized Russians dictated otherwise...
However, if you can get a decent amount of Comrades, I'll join in the fight against the fascist pigs!

According to posts in the forum, it looks like the early October event in Indiana is running into issues with the land and date. Have you considered contacting Karl and offering up your Wisconsin land for the October event?

Meh... An Ostfront event definitely puts me out of the action as I'm 45th, which is to say, an American unit. I am definitely open to any events in the future that involve some dog faced G.I.s!

You can always go as a Russian partisan. The use of volksturm, partisans, and resistance is always a good way to balance sides. Yes, the Neilsville guys are russians but if they go to Illinois, they may want to join the allies as resistance. It is all in how you craft a scenario.

We're running three Ostfront-themed skirmishes on Saturday 13 Oct. Go to the thread "patton Unleashed" for details. Is that little enough notice?

The 2009 Ostfront season will kickoff with the Feb. event up in Pickerel, Wi. Now's a good time to work on your Russian kit and be ready to join the ranks of the 198th Rifle Division. I will be holding a Russian Sewing Party Jan.24th 9am to 4pm at our battlefields' white farm house (N2955 Sidney Ave.) in Neillsville, Wi. We will work on uniforms and gear. We will also talk about squad tactics, leadership and events for 2009..

I would like to get a russian kit started and mabye even travel out to one of your bigger games. the only thing that is killing me is the weapon. every thing else seems to be pretty cheap compared to other countries. Are you selling any russian weapons?

A lot of our Russians use "captured" AGM MP40s.

A lot of our Russians use "captured" AGM MP40s. That is true. But... if starting out from scratch, why not skip the extra investment and go for broke. A Russian PPsh-41 (a la Gryphon) is the best thing going. It makes you very scary on the battlefield. Oh, and an update for those considering this coming season on the East Front. It looks like we might (real good chance) be adding another field in the Minneapolis area. 100-acres being offered up for a May or Jun event. That along with our successful use of the commercial site in Rochester, MN last year should assure us 6 planned events this coming year and that is at present. Chairsofters rise up and get your kit and guns out of the trunk. 2009 should be a banner year for MOA.
