Franz, on the Ostfront, ammo was in plentiful supply. Potatoes, however, were damn hard to come by. Ever heard of "scorched earth?" Both sides practiced it - the rich farmland of the Ukraine was burned three times during the war, and this was on top of the rural population being deliberately starved by Stalin before the war broke out. The effects of this were so severe that there was a shortage of basic agricultural staples like seed and cattle for over 50 years after 1945, despite the fact that the Ukraine has some of the most deep and fertile topsoil on the planet - so fertile that the Germans literally scraped off thousands of truckloads of it and shipped it back to the Fatherland's farms.
I stand by my scenario. It wasn't all about bullets and bombs.

As of right now I'm planning on being there. Hmmm... where have I seen that armored car before?

Not sure at the moment, but I don't think either of the two guys that came with last time can make it.

We've got some other exciting developments regarding the field this year.
First off, participants are encouraged to erect authentic camps on the game field Friday. Those wishing to immerse themselves in the period may do so in the authentic camps, where no unauthentic equipment or clothing will be allowed. Modern camping and anachronisms are allowed in the parking lot just like last year. This way there is a place for those desiring authenticity and those desiring comfort. By walking onto "the stage" of the game field, you will be encouraged to keep things to a reenacting standard of accuracy. If you then desire to guzzle down Coke or slide into a modern tent and sleeping bag, you can do so in the modern camp/parking area.
The authentic camps may be left standing for the games on Saturday, where they will serve as respawn points for the day's scenarios.
Finally, this year I'll be setting up "Udo's Kneipe" in the village. This way participants can socialize and cohort around the village without the intrusion of car lights and other aspects of modernity.
When the chronograph opens at 8:00 AM on Saturday, the game field will be evacuated and all participants must wear eye protection on the field from that point forward.
Looking forward to it!

Check out Cpl. Mills' "Russian Front" thread in "Kilroy Was Here" - his pics were taken a couple of weeks ago at the field during a Ostfront blank-fire event. It's snowy right now, but probably won't be in another couple of weeks....

Three more recruits have stepped forward - my ol' tank-buildin' buddy JimB will muster as a Nationalist Hiwi Partisan for the Germans, and two more streloki have swelled the ranks of the CDA Squad on the Soviet side. That takes us up to 43 players expected as of 3/18, and I'm still waiting on some local confirmations!

Regardless, though, we're all going to have a swell time. Thanks for your efforts.

For those of us who are ammoing up:
Bio-BBs are NOT required for this event - regular BBs are fine for the April 12 skirmish. Mesh goggles are banned, however.

I was reading the rules... I’m not going to be allowed to wear my regular shooting glasses as I’m accustom too, huh?

I was reading the rules... I’m not going to be allowed to wear my regular shooting glasses as I’m accustom too, huh? Not so. The requirement vaguely states that goggles "must fully encompass the eyes, with no gaps." This is not to be confused with "full seal." There just can't be any gaps around the shooting glasses where a bb might enter. We had this question come up on our team's internal forum. We should change the wording to be more clear. Most of us in the 3 PZGR wear safety/shooting glasses too.

The organizers don't like the mesh because a splintered bb can still cause damage. Their land, their rules. It is safer that way. Sorry to counter your response Udo.

Wraparound shooting glasses with retaining straps are allowed, mesh goggles are not. The important thing, if you wear wraparound shooting glasses instead of full-seal goggles, is to add that elastic retaining strap to your shooting glasses (if you haven't already) so they can't be knocked off accidently.
A mouthguard or balaclava to protect your teeth is also highly recommended but not required....

That was what must have been in ersatzjack2's mind when he responded. Mesh is out but the shooting glasses are in as long as they are strapped on.

Just updated the roster, adding Wolfgang Voigt to the ranks of the 3rd, and Sam the Strelok to the Soviet CDA squad to offset the loss or the 198th's Pamela.
EDIT UPDATE: Weg Sonnemauer has joined the Hiwis, bringing us to 45 confirmed!

If I can get out of work next Friday, I plan on driving up from St. Louis! An 8-9 hour drive I think. I will have gear for an FJ impression as well as an SS impression.

Gruppe Ost/3rd PzGr (those are the frontline fighters Udo, you know, not the replacement squad ) will mostly try to make it in on Friday at 5pm. Friday looks to be a good filming opportunity so troops should be arriving in gear as much as possible so we don't waste the daylight. We also seem to be on schedule for two premiers but not the third. So expect something new in the afteractions. Tee-hee. Yeah, I am looking forward to another Neillsville battle.

Are there any directions to the game? When I plug the address into Google Maps, it doesn't show you an exact location!!
Also are there any hotels nearby?
Thanks!

www.mapquest.com will take you from your door to the event parking lot at: N2955 Sidney Ave. Neillsville, WI. 54456. MapQuest can also give you a area hotel/motel listing. There is plenty of room for setting up tents for camping and limited space indoors for sleeping if you bring a sleeping bag.

Thanks! Map quest worked! I don't know why Google maps didn't! It just got you close, but not an exact location. Now if the weather doesn't cause a problem for my getting there Not with playing, mind you! I actually like battles when it's snowing, I just don't like making 8 hour drives in bad weather

Plus I know ba64 made some new signage for the event. Keep you eyes peeled for the WW2AA emblem sign and a new one, the Midwest Ostfront Airsoft or MOA sign. SWEET! If you make it up you won't be sorry. This is gonna be a great event. I hope you decide to go the camping route. That is fun even in bad weather. Adds to the memories. Makes you look battle-worn on Saturday morning if your night was really miserable. Ha!
