Damn...300 bucks is a lot for something like a 45min ride. Be sure to get a good spot in the bird. They offer these pretty much whenever old warbirds (bombers especially) do tours or airshows, it's how they can manage to keep them flying and restored. I think the money is actually tax deductable too..

Damn...300 bucks is a lot for something like a 45min ride. Yeah, but several hundred bucks for a toy gun that shoots BB's is way too much for most other people as well. It's all relative! I've flown with the Collings Foundation before, ridden a B-24, B-17 (more than once, each) and P-51 and never paid a dime. That being said, if I'd never gotten those rides, yes, I would have paid it by now to get an experience that you can't put into words, no matter how short it is! When the CAF ever gets their B-29 flying again, I might just pay for a ride if I ever get near it, so I can say I've flown in all the heavies! DO IT NOW, you never know when the FAA someday might decide these things should forever stay on the ground or can't take anyone but crew aloft. You just never know what the future holds...

I agree whole heartedly with P51. I flew in a P51 (stuck back where the radios were) at the Abbotsford air show years ago with a friend of mine and it was a lifetime experience. I paid to go up in a B-17 and never regret it for a minute. Someday your grandkids won't believe you did it and you'll never be sorry you did.
Just hearing the engines fly over your house is an experience. They have such a distinctive and memorable sound. I love em.

Is that the one from the Collings Foundation? They bring out the B25, B24, and their new P-51? If they did, watch for the P-51. When they came out here to Livermore in CA he spent two days doing hot laps. It was great.

John, did the Mustang pilot do some fighter maneuvers or did he do the "bus driver" thing? It depends on who you talk to as experiences vary. I've talked to people who were bored to tears on their war bird rides. I'm lucky, my Mustang ride was piloted by a USAF F-15 pilot with something to prove. We "bounced" the Collings formation right off the Gulf Coast of Florida, and the whole bunch of us (P-51, B-24, B-17, T-6) all buzzed the field at Panama City several times. Here are some random photos from these trips, if anyone cares: img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/willysmb44/909a.jpg img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/willysmb44/B24a.jpgimg.photobucket.com/albums/v214/willysmb44/b24b.jpg These guys have a B-29 that they promise will be back in the air eventually. Once they do, if they come to the northwest, I think I'd seriously consider paying for a ride: www.cafb29b24.org/ There's also another B-29 in the works and they also promise they'll have it in the air eventually: www.b-29doc.com/ What kills me is that I missed out on a ride on the CAF B-29 in the late 80s. If I hadn't had to go to work, I could likely have gotten a ride with the newspaper folks. Oh well. Of course if you have a little extra cash, you can get your very own B-29: www.aerotrader.net/b29.html Some assembly is required, of course.

The owner promised my wife he wouldn't do anything stupid or exotic in the plane during the airfield low level fly over. We were in a trail of WW2 fighters including a F4F, a fake Zero a T6 trainer a Mersserschmidt single seater (not a 109) and a couple others. When he got to the center of the field he did a four point, snap roll that was extremely cool. Apparently P51s don't like to fly upside down in stock form and it's a decidedly bad idea at low level. In his case he had alterred something tied to the fuel injectors and claimed he didn't have that issue. None the less the grand marshall of the event apparently expressed his displeasure so the stunt wasn't repeated again during the event. My wife who was on the ground watching wasn't too thrilled with him either.
He bought the aircraft fairly cheap and spent a very manageable amount restoring it. He was with the Confederate Airforce (they were all Colonels) and he sold it for almost a million dollars so in essence it became his retirement. he bought a T-6 and flew it for years and sold it at a nice profit. The Mustang was spendy to maintain and operate where the T-6 was considerably more affordable.

If you like old planes go to the Wings over the Rockies Museum in Denver. My dad volunteers there and it is fun to walk around the museum. Unfortunately it is small and they are struggling for money. So shameless plug, go visit and support the museum. The last time I was in town I got to sit in some of the planes. He also helps out on the tarmac with the B17, doing crowd control getting the people on and off. One of my fondest memories from when I was a little kid in the 70's was going to an airshow and being able to sit in a Corsair and a Zero. Unfortunately did not get to go for a ride too young then

Paul Allen (of Microsoft fame) has a museum up here in the NW and has an incredible collection of flying WW2 aircraft. He even has a mock Me 262 which apart from the engines (internally) is virtually identical to the original aircraft. I saw it fly over Marysville several years ago in a low approach while landing and couldn't believe my eyes. At the time of course I thought it was an original and was shocked that any of them were operational.
The rumor is Paul has acquired real planes to replace the models he had hanging from his bedroom ceiling as a kid. God it must be nice to have billions! It's wonderul that someone can fund such a wonderful display to preserve history.

About two years ago I was delievering (UPS) in Folsom and heard a massive noise.... I looked up to see a b17, b24, b29, and b25 all flying together... where they were going I do not know but it was a pretty much awesome sight... and noise. Close to one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I think that seeing the P38 fly this year may have topped the bombers, but it's close.
Maybe 6 months later my girlfriend and I saw a b17 and b24 flying near Santa Cruz. I would jump at the chance to ride in WW2 aircraft, a b17 would be at the top of my list for sure.

This is not really an event. Perhaps the B17 thread could be moved to a different section. The radio shack or Kilroy threads come to mind.

A soviet transport and bomber plane famous for it's method of carrying paratroopers I've actually heard rumors that this idea was the idea that inspired Hitler to start the Luftwaffe Fallshirmjager Korp
