Patton was remarkably authentic in terms of dialoque as many of the lines were direct quotes and it does a terrific job of depicting a very complex individual. The vehicles of course were modern which kind of sucked and there were a number of other trivial infidelities not the least of which was George C Scotts deep gravelly voice when compared to the actual Pattons high squeaky voice.
I also enjoyed Battleground which got an Academy Award for script. The dialogue was spot on and the uniforms and equipment were for the most part right on since the movie was made shortly after the war. 101st in the battle of the Bulge.
Another great war movie was Go For Broke also made shortly after the war and featuring many of the actual 442nd soldiers. (Japanese Americans)

I thought downfall was just a touching love story full of hope and rainbow sunshine. It was a war movie?
I thought downfall was an excellent movie. No matter what movie you watch there are stitch counters somewhere in a dark room finding a medal out of place or a postwar watch on someone.

The Battle of Britain from 1969 , lots of real aircraft , not CGI crap , even tough the HE111s and ME109s are the Spanish versions.
Also "The Story of G.I. Joe" from 1945 and based on an article written by Ernie Pyle (who died April 18, 1945 on Ie Shima , before getting to see the premier of the movie)

I honestly cant say which movie i think is the most historically accurate, as i havent seen quite as many films as others, but as far as the most historically correct of the ones ive seen, Downfall definatly takes the cake.

I like the movies based on Cornelius Ryans books, longest day and Brigde too far, they both did a good job at telling the story, sure there are some mistakes, but they are one of the few movies I would have shown in a history class.

I have always liked Battleground, Go For Broke, The Battle of Britain and few others too. I do have to say though, that after having visited the whole of the Normandy area, that I really enjoyed the Longest Day, as so many of the scenes were filmed on the location of the actual battles. The scenes of the battles at Sainte Mere Eglise, Pegasus Bridge as well as Pointe du Hoc to name a few, were all filmed where it really happened. They also had correct vehicles for the most part in the movie, Sherman and Churchill tanks.
What about Band of Brothers?!?! Does that count as a movie?? Another great WW2 film is Das Boot!! Probably the best U-boat film ever made, although the story may be more fiction than fact, it does blow U-571 right out of the water as far as I'm concerned!!

In no particular order:
Das Boot (The 5 Hour extended mini-series version)
Downfall (In German w/English Subtitles)
The Winter War (Finnish film about the Soviet/Finnish war of 1939/1940. EXCELLENT FILM!!!)

+1 for Winter War. I've been putting off buying a copy on DVD due to the high cost, but I remember I was really impressed by it.

C'mon guys! We all know that the best ever is Hogans Heroes! LOL. On the serious side I think Band Of Brothers is the best. Saving private Ryan is good too.

I'm sorry but I'll be blunt here...That comment was applesauce ty Kradatz. Why not just say I don't feel either of those films was very historically correct and here is why A. B. C.? I mean there was no reason to be a dick but you went out of your way to do so.

Well Kraddatz.....Band of Brothers was Historically true! And SPR is based on similar searches for troops like Ryan who lost all Brothers. I'm sorry to so extremely offend you. Its obvious who the 14 yr old is in this discussion.
