This is for all the people out there trying to decide whether they should buy a Marushin gas-powered M1 or 2ndBat's conversion.
First, The Marushin M1 Garand Spartan Imports (SI) Export Version:
Its heavy, all wood and metal, and looks and feels like a real M1. The externals are right on the dot and there are even Springfield trademarks. What's the catch then? Oh, maybe the fact that you get 800 rounds or so then have a $500 wallhanger. I thought that the Marushin M1 would be great, but it had too many problems.
-the hop-up exploded
-the gas tank had a small capacity and leaked after a few dozen shots
-the bolt had numerous problems and eventually snapped
Its a lot of fun for the first 200 shots or so, then you realize the limitations and then after that, you get broken parts. Marushin had a great design, but the build materials were not up to the heavy-duty blowback action.
2nd Bat's AEG Conversion:
2ndBat makes M1 Garand conversions from various M14s. He uses Marui, AGM, and CYMA rifles as bases. The externals are the main compromise with this choice.
-the selector switch of the M14 is still there unless you remove it
-most versions do not have a correct wooden stock
-the receiver group has some differences from the RS M1.
These are very minor things, however. The end product is a solid, skirmishable replica. Mine is a stock Marui and has far outlasted my Marushin.
He uses as real steel front end, including the gas assembly, rear handguard, and front handguard. The stock is either a modified M14 stock or, he has an option for a properly shaped wood stock. My M1 has the plastic stock and I have no complaints aside from some easily fixed chips.
The 2ndBat M1 definitely beats the Marushin because of its reliability and skirmishable design. For anyone looking for an airsoft M1, just go with the AEG conversion. Save yourself $500 and go straight for the reliable method. Hope this helps...
