Historical Background
The Mignano Gap was a key position in the Bernhardt Line, which was essentially a southern bulge in the more formidable Gustav line. The Bernhardt (or Reinhard) line was tasked with delaying 5th Army’s advance to Cassino and the entrance to the Liri Valley. The XIV Panzer Corps was charged with the line’s defense. In the center of the 5th Army front lay the Mignano Gap, which because of the marshy conditions on the coastal plain, was the only realistic path to the mouth of the Liri valley.
The town of San Pietro was occupied by the Germans in September 1943 to prepare for the allied thrust. German infantry evacuated all non-essential Italians from the town; women, children and old men and conscripted all other able-bodied men to help construct defenses and seize available vehicles. Battalions of the XIV Panzer Corps set up a defensive network in the entire area, particularly on Monte Sammucro and Monte Lungo, which overlooked the Mignano Gap. These heights surrounding San Pietro were strategically important positions because they allowed the control of the long stretch of Highway 6, imperative for the allied advance north. A defensive line crossing from the base of Monte Lungo to the base of Monte Sammucro was also present. The direct attack on the German positions in and around San Pietro began on December 8, 1943 by II Corps of the 5th Army.
It took six weeks of heavy fighting-from early November to late December-to overcome the German defenses. During that time, the Fifth Army sustained a grueling 16,000 casualties. The highway through the Mignano Gap to the Liri Valley was nicknamed "Death Valley" by members of the attacking force. The battle destroyed the town of San Pietro completely with a combination of close combat, both Allied and German mortar and artillery, and German "scorched earth" policy.
