Okay, glad it's not too bad. I may pick up a Rothco one. There only 9.00 bucks for the canteen and an incorrect cover which I won't be using (I have an ATF one)
With all this talk about Zelts and Pup Tents and encampments in general, should I bring my E-Tool?

The ridge around it is to big it is to small, and is cap and chain are not good either. the worst has to be the size. if you put it in your ATF 1910 canteen case it will look horrible. When I did not have the dow to get an good canteen I used that kind. If you do not hied me then get wooden block and put it in the case to prop up the canteen. As for the E-tool. I would bring it. You can do anything from dig a sh*t hole to bang in a tent peg.

I'll get it and use a bandage to prop it up like they did in Vietnam with magazine pouches sometimes.

Is there a place to eat if we don't have period mess kits? And the same for tents?

Herec, the ones at my Surplus store are like $7.00 with nothing in them. I can pick one up for you if you'd like. s4military.com/images/759a.jpgAre these good? "GI Stainless Mess Kit"

I know I found a good use for my mess kit at JTD. I thought it would just be extra weight, but they made us a big pot meal saturday night of spaghetti. Some guys ate out of their helmets...I had my mess kit and I was saved.

Mess kits didn't really change too much over the years from WW2 till now but I dug through the local surplus store to get a 43 or 44 dated mess tin. Careful someone might check the date on ya.

Don't sweat the canteen medic. It may be "Flaggrantly Wrong" but nobody will kick you out for not havign a look-alike canteen.
Postwar mess kit's IMO are acceptable. Even if the date is 1946+ it will still look much better than something that isn't a mess kit. If you can't find a proper spoon (because really that's all you need) then go in your kitchen and get an 40's 'ish one that you "liberated".
In general I say bring as much as you can. Last event I brought 4 guns (ended up using 3) and plenty of extra stuff that I wouldn't "need" and left it in the car. Some of it was borrowed by people who needed stuff and I was glad to have brought it. I've come to learn bring more than what you're going to carry because you have the luxury of a safe place to store it all (unlike a GI) and you feel like much less of an idiot then if you forget something the one time that week/month/year you need it.
One thing I dont think has been mentioned is to bring WATER. Knowing NY in the summer, it's probably gonna be hot. Just get a gallon + of water and tuck it away somewhere and refill whenever you need to. I got dehydrated a few weeks ago at an event (wools+heat=bad) and it's not an experience I'd like to repeat.

Like was said just bring a big spoon! I may be making a big pot dinner of Stroganoff or Stew on Saturday night, gotta see how I am feeling.

[1] Yeah, I didn't really think anybody would be that anal about canteens. [2] It has been mentioned, but no harm in reminding!

Aw I'd love to mate, but I can't be eatin' any of your stinkin' Jerry food. Unless we could both patrol, at the same time, and "just happen" to trade some items... You like American tobacco? Haha... I'm trying to get as complete of an impression as I can for the event, want to do justice to everyone else. Looking for deals and such, will probably shell out more money in a period than I should, but hey, I probably won't be buying stuff for awhile after this event. Go big or go home, I guess!

Yeah, Common you Americans… Can’t let the Germans one-up yeah on camping!
I know Gordak(Sam) is bringing a Ten Man “command” Tent. If some of you Americans bring some pup tents… I’m sure your encampment will be a sight to see!

Glad to see you guys are having another summer Event, working in retail stinks as usually its tough to get weekends off in November and December! so I had to miss the bulge game. I'm psyched for this one! It seems you guys are really keying in on the authenticity of the event, hopefully everyone will have an impression and we won't see any BGS jump smocks or paintball jerseys!!!!!! The US guys always look top notch! I'll be traveling from NYC or Stamford Connecticut if I leave straight from work I may have some room if anyone would like to participate and doesn't have a ride we can maybe set up a pickup point somewhere along the thruway, I'll also be bringing my 4 person zelt tent, some wool blankets and a bunch of period looking rations. By the way we will be leaving/arriving on Friday if anyone is interested in that ride. -Gerry

So in recognition of your wonderful criticism we wanted to reward you by giving the best camping spot on the field ........... right next to the latrine. You don’t even have to move to go. ;D PS Ray made me say this
