pour boiling water in it and put in small stones, or fish rocks and shake it up. The small items break off the rust that may be inside
Be careful wiht your hands though, because the boilingw ater will heat up the canteen very fast, so use oven mits, or you could even keep the cover around it

try filling it with coke. Leave it for a week or two, and it should overpower the smell, and the syrup might chip away at the mold. Coke is a very good rust remover, its worth a shot at the mold. Also boiling water kills mold

I just rinse them a couple of times with hot water and use a bottle cleaner thats all..The fear of germs is a bit overhyped..Trust your body,it deals with that crap all day long.. :-)

What i do to clean "things" is to pour ...i dont know how you call it in english.. Use babelfish and it came up as: Caustic Soda It is a black liquid that removes everything. It acts like dilute sulphuric acid... But be careful guys to not use "Caustic Soda" in things made out of Al or any other soft metal, it will just dissolve it! Im not making this up. I know it by experience as my grandfather owns a japanese restasurant and well, friepans need a good cleaning everyday! If any of you comes to Madrid,Spain, I will certainly invite you guys!!!! www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187514-d795268-Reviews-Janatomo-Madrid.html
