Just started playing myself still need to finish basic training, otherwise I like it already. Name is Alban on there as well...I am still a noob though there is a lot to take in with this game!

It is not so much a learning curve as it is a slope discontinuity where the brick wall starts. I had a lot of fun with this game. Hands down it beats any other in terms of team cooperation. Can you imagine a Call of Duty player waiting a half hour to load up a truck to drive to the front lines where the most he can personally do is find a nice bush to hide in and deploy? Or to fly for 40 minutes to make an airborne attack across the Channel? I think not.

WW2OL can be extremely fun and rewarding, but only if you have the mentality for it. The biggest thing you will need is patience, patience, patience. The game plays on a half scale map of Europe with no loading zones. Ya, you heard that right. You will be in for a LOT of wait and travel time. If your guy marches at 4 kph, and the enemy town is 4 clicks away, it will take you a real life hour to walk there on foot. Fortunately there are plenty of vehicles that can transport you much faster, but that might entail waiting for a half hour while your truck driver collects people and moves out.
WW2OL is also punishingly realistic, much more so than any other game you are likely to have played. That is a big draw for many of us, but a lot of people cannot handle it. As an infantry man, any single hit is likely to kill you. Rarely will you ever be wounded. This means you can spend 10 minutes walking to the front lines, only to be dropped instantly by some guy hiding in a bush that you never saw. The same thing applies to the vehicles. One good round can wreck your tank, or potentially do absolutely nothing if they are not hitting you with anything large enough to penetrate your armor. Aircraft can often sustain some light damage and keep on going, but a single 40mm Bofors hit will bring you down nicely. Similarly your ammunition loadouts are accurate. If you fighter is carrying a single bomb and you botch the attack, you have to fly back to your airbase to rearm. 10-15 minutes travel times are nothing unusual. A couple times I flew for an hour in a Stuka to bomb factories in France.
Both of these attributes make for an extremely steep learning curve and lot of initial frustration. There are also a lot of controls to learn for all the vehicles and aircraft.
Now, that said, WW2OL can be extremely rewarding if you can put up with it. Because it is a subscription game and such a niche game, player cooperation is very high. I have seen people wait an hour or more to collect enough players for an assault, paradrop, strategic bombing raid or even something boring like transferring equipment from a rear city to the front lines. When my friend and I first joined, we were not playing 15 minutes before someone invited us to their clan.
My favorite experience in the game was the first time I accompanied my new clan to bust forward bases. Since you fight over cities like they were control point, the game will give the attacker a forward base between two cities if they are particularly far apart. These bases can be destroyed, but only by infantry with satchel charges. Since all the enemy attackers spawn there, it can be difficult to fight your way in to get the job done. So instead, we all loaded up in a transport plane. Most of us were not high enough level to be paratroopers. Our pilot flew low until he was about two kilometers from the enemy base, then cut his engines and glided in to land on a nearby field. We went out on foot, jumped the base suddenly, overwhelmed its few defenders (most of them were off on the front lines), blew the place and escaped back to our plane with minimal casualties. This is the kind of high reward/awesome experience that is the highlight of the game. That and the combined arms. You might be a light mortar guy riding into battle on the back of a tank. Looking around you see a half dozen pieces of armor massed for this attack, plus two trucks towing antitank and antiaircraft guns. Overhead, your fighters swarm to establish local air superiority so that bombers can come and go to pound enemy positions. If you are near the sea or a river, you might even have a patrol boat or a destroyer prowling about causing additional havoc. Down the road you can just see the city over the horizon. Distant and dull sounds of battle drift toward you while AA tracers stitch the evening sky. Every one of those thing is controlled by a human player (aside from some minor town defenses), and they are all cooperating to take the same objective you are.
You will also come to appreciate the high degree of realism. As a puny rifleman, you can do basically nothing against tanks, so you will find yourself hiding in the brush hoping they pass without seeing you. All you can do is report their position to your team. A lot of work went into the sounds, and after a while you will be able to identify weapons and vehicles by the sound they make. Auditory awareness is very important in WW2OL. You can hear tanks coming from a long way away. If you are defending in a tank, you will frequently kill your engine, so you can better remain unnoticed and hear your environment around you. More than once I advanced because I recognized the sound of Mausers firing ahead of me (opposed to enemy rifles). The noise of approaching aircraft will sloooooowly grow until someone notices it and yells a warning and everyone scatters. Infantry classes are carefully restricted so not everyone is running around as a sniper or machine gunner. Tanks, when buttoned up, have very restricted visibility. This makes them easy to sneak up on, so you will want to have infantry support wherever you go. I have seen a lone sapper cause mass destruction because a group of enemy tanks went out by themselves. And on the rare occasion when you find yourself in a perfect ambush position with the perfect weapon facing a cluster of enemy units, you can open fire and decimate them in a hurry before they can react, rather than merely eroding their hit points until they see and zerg you. Shortly after we started playing, my friend summed things up nicely. We were accompanying our tanks on an attack and had come under fire. We jumped off and took cover behind a berm while machine gun fire raked the ridge above us. Our tanks deployed, returning fire with deafening cannon fire. I asked him how he was, and he responded "I'm scared to move. And it feels good."

The wait time isnt as bad anymore, Rekkon, is talking about the old version of the game, now we have brigades and mobile spawns, meaning its easy to enter within 1000 to 500 meters of the combat. Paratrooper missions still take forever though and 80% of the time you die without firing a shot.

There were mobile spawn trucks when I was playing. It still takes you a while to cover a click on foot, especially if you do it intelligently by staying in cover and not blatantly betraying the spawn point's location.
