This is a project I started a while ago and with my usual blazing speed I'm finally making some progress . I took the plastic stock from my old TSD M14 (no loss there if I screw it up) and covered it with wood veneer after building up the fore end with wood scrap. I made several false starts before I found a suitable veneer, which turned out to be a piece of 3 millimeter underlayment plywood that was left in the rain and started delaminating. The outer layers are a millimeter thick or less. To handle it I had to cover one side with masking tape to keep it from coming apart along the grain. One nice thing, it cuts easily with scissors. Down side, it doesn't do complex curves. Getting it to fit aroundthe pistol grip was a real pain. Also, being so thin it was easy to sand right through it. Initially I started out using epoxy glue. When I started with the veneer I switch to Gorilla glue. First time I've used it. At the bottom of the pic, it's been stained with dark walnut and given three coats of Birchwood Casey linseed stock oil. It looks ok from a distance, up close you see all the imperfections. It's more time consuming than the Bondo method. Not sure if I'd want to do any more, but I have a better idea of how to do it now. I do plan to try it in converting a VSR10 to an Enfield No. 1 Mk III.

Nice job. Must have been hard work. I tried a similar approach to this minus the veneer. I built up the stock with a wood piece then went over to fill in the gaps with bondo. It looks nice in the end. The wood was hard to cut right and fit on correctly though. I don't think I'd do it again. Next time I am going to try cutting out a plastic block and plastic welding it on.

Well, I finally got back to working on this project, after much pondering of the many mistakes I made. "Measure once, cut twice, get the glue". ;D So, it's finally almost done. I still need to work on the mags and clean up some details.

Looks better in the picture than in real life, because my old digital camera is only 1.2 megapixels. The veneer is a pain because it's hard to do complex curves with one piece and the joints between pieces are really obvious. Also, despite being very thin, the veneer threw off the dimensions of the butt enough that the RS buttplate is too small. I'm not really satisfied with it, but it's a learning experience.
