I was doing some research on the 1st airborne task force and i saw some archival footage of a paratrooper wearing a m1943 with painted camo in the 517th First Airborne Task Force, US Forces, before Dragoon Jump. You can see it around 0:44 seconds if it doesent work try this link www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax5Mt6X5Vd4

I always thought that the m1943 was first used by paras in Market Garden but this para in 44 seconds is wearing a m1943 in Dragoon. Really weird. It cant be varsity cuz the para has camo and has arm flam on left arm.

Sometimes a portion of a clip will be out of context and from a different time period or an entirely different unit but in this case the shot truly does seem to be from the jump prep for this operation and after repeated viewing it definitely appears to be a camouflage splotched M43. I have heard of M43s present at Normandy but alwaus considered the reports to be dubious but with this wonderful color composite one has to wonder.
Great clip of video.

It is an oddity being that early. Someone will of course point out that we should represent the common not the uncommon...as a gear whore I like to represent both...lol

Why would that seem odd? When you are putting your life on the line and have adequate time and materials to do so you do whatever you can to stack the odds in your favor. Some units pur greater emphasis on camouflage than others but once encouraged people get quite creative. Naturally once in the campaign the ability to keep such things up deminishes and things gradually look more and more standardized.
The presents of that M43 is definitely a cool find and the extent to which they applied camouflage is neat. The newly available color footage is great isn't it?

Yeh now I wonder if their wearing m43 trousers rigger modified. I cant tell. The main reason I was looking this up is that im making a short ww2 film and I have a repro m43 i could camoflouge for my movie cuz it takes place in Operation dragoon.

I did a lot of research on operation Dragoon for my 509th and 517th impressions. The 517th PRCT used M43s (and M42s) during Operation Dragoon. There are many photos in the "First Airborne Task Force" book for example, even some colour ones. It was not a super rare excepetion in the 517th PRCT, both M42s and M43s where widely used by this unit. M43s and M42s where camouflaged with sprayed on green and black (as did all US Airborne units ). All gear was camouflaged as well. Here is a link to my 517th impression (in M42s ) ww2aa.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=allied&thread=719&page=7#77792

I've read that the M43 field jacket was first issued to troops at Anzio. Makes sense, since in early '44 that's where the fighting was. They were slower to be issued to NW Europe.
