Yea I see now, if you lowered the gearbox you'd have to lower the barrel. Oh well.

Ok ok then forget what i said forget the whole convorsation i just thought it would be a cool idea. You said it was possible and simple , remember? no accually i am right. i have taken apart a few gearboxes in my day. i have made several custom airsoft weapons. it is possible to load an aeg from the top just with a new gearbox. the loading assembly barrel would be turned upside down and the enbloc would have the bbs fall into the tube. its simple ive seen it done.

I'm discouraged I was hoping for a simple explanation on how to do this. I may never work on another custom project again.

As I see it, not being a mechanical engineer etc etc etc, the may problem with a top loading AEG is the gearbox/mag/hopup interface. A not ideal solution would be to incorporate the hopup into the magazine. That still leaves potential compression leaks at nozzle/hopup and introduces a new one at the hopup barrel connections.

It did look like it would work, but some of you guys proved me wrong. i did do a little studying and looked at my cyma m14 gearbox and realised it is impossible with even a custom gearbox. unless somehow you could make the motor in the stock and a really skinny gearbox it would never work. i would like feeding through the bottom ok.

Nothing is impossible, but... as stated even by mattroxu, highly impractical The cavalier way you proposed it and insisted that it could be "easily" done is what took people back I'm afraid.

Ok thanks. instead of saying matt is right you have to calll my idea HIGHLY IMPRACTICAL. it did seem as it could be easily done but i never had time to back up my answer so there you go. i can now explain how my great idea cannot be done.

To the OP I thing the easiest US gun to make would be a Springfield with a VSR base.
About the top loading AEG Garand I have been playing around with this idea for a while and it is possible! Sadly however, the mechanism that would make it work would have to be so stupidly complicated it would be a big sacrifice in price for that added bit of realism.
In a nutshell the easiest way I can think of is A) you need a smaller gearbox. B) As the bolt goes back have a mechanism which would push the inner barrel and hop-up unit forward. C) have a cut-out in the rear of the magazine so it would fit around the loading nozzle. D) Have a lock to lock the magazine in a lower position so the hop-up could clear the BB retaining lip (I don't know the name) when sliding back. E) Have the hop-up chamber hit a switch releasing the magazine upwards to lock it in place.
After all that there still is one problem, how do you get the darned thing out? So it is possible to make a top loading AEG Garand but I am perfectly happy sacrificing a little bit of realism for a simpler AEG that can take shotgun mags with a little but of modification. If you'd like me to do a drawing I'd be perfectly happy to do so.

And Alder if you were refering to me no offence but i dont eat dessert. Wtf kid, you're like what? 14? On a lighter note, if you're still intent on making something custom, definitely go for a Springfield, it's something that we'd like to see more and more in the field.

ha yeah i was going to choose the BAR-10 to springfield or the cyma m14 for the m1 garand. i chose the garand. i would have gotten a springfield if i was a marine reeinactor or a sniper but im just in ordanary rifle man.

Even if you had a smaller gearbox and all the moving parts mentioned above it would be really pathetic to shoot. smaller gearbox = smaller cylinder volume = less air to shoot the bb out. With the limited space, the amount of air in the tiny cylinder wouldn't be enough to push the bb out of the barrel! Plus all the moving parts = more air leaks. Again, the only way to make a realistic top loading garand would be to make it GAS like the marushin.
Anyway, the best US rifle to build would be a garand from an M14 clone. Although i've suffered lots of headaches with the cheap potmetal on my cyma m14 during my build. A lot of the parts were brittle and broke with normal handling. Now my garand is made out of mainly a Cyma, part of the receiver is KART, the triggerguard is AGM, and the gearbox is from a 2nd Cyma. With the amount i've spent on the clone rifle and all replacement parts, i would have been better off buying a TM instead.

My cyma m14 hasent caused me any trouble. Accually my conversion is going great! Oh and the basicly non shooting m1 garand would look cool though.

The parts that have broken on my Clone AGM M14 are the following: The bolt cover and the safety lever thing. Not too big of a deal to me. The bolt cover doesn't brake if you don't rack it a lot. I got a new one for pretty cheap. I don't really remember how the safety lever broke.
I don't go around banging it around or dropping it. I try to be careful with my guns. I guess if you really want a "real steel" quality gun you'll have to pay a lot more then $150. Even if I got a more expensive rifle I'd still be careful with it though. You get what you pay for I guess.
By the way, what is the Mauri M14 made out of, the metal parts that is, Aluminum?

Mine was a Cyma. Cyma has had a pretty good record so i'm guessing i got a lemon. QC is soso when it comes to these ACM guns. The metal parts on the TM are also "pot metal" which is basically a zinc alloy casting. The difference is the quality of the casting process.

There you go, your bolt broke. Therefore it isn't "excellent". My point is that this is less likely to happen with a TM. Don't get me wrong, i'm not bashing ACM guns. Most of my stuff is ACM. I was just disappointed with the unit i got as i had to replace a lot.

I have been delighted with the CYMA and AGMs. For the money they represent a much better value than the Maruis. If the price was the same of course I'd go with the Marui but for a 200.00 diference and a much lower initial FPS on the Marui the CYMA or AGMs are the way to go. I've had very few things break on any of them.
