It amazes my that the web gear in desert storm is almost exactly the same as from the end of the vietnam war >> SOMEWHAT the same, not exactly. The military was just starting to use nylon web gear starting about 1967,but it was never fully integrated into the military till the late 70's. Even then, most Reserve and Guard units used the M56 webgear well into the 80's.

Yeah, I use the same rig for my vietnam late war kit but to keep it straight a normally use canvas for the canteens and universal pouches. But for the record they were issued during 'nam. But than again The third guy down got a M56 canvas aid pouch on his left shoulder same one on this 56 rig

LC-1 was not issued during the Vietnam war , what was issued was M67 gear , M67 and LC-1 are two different sets of gear.
During the buildup and then during the ground war i saw a large number of the 82nd guys wearing M56 gear and some even carried M14s. Hell the first tanks from the US to arrive in Saudi where the M551 Sheridan's the 82nd brought with them.

Interesting I never knew that. So what do you propose, using 67s or 56s for the ammo pouch's on a late war impression?

The M67 web gear was issued piecemeal. Rarely would you see a guy with the complete set. Guys would have bits and pieces of it. You can get it kinda cheap,as theres a lot of mint unissued pieces out there still. I picked up 2 sets of unissued H- straps still wrapped up. A lot of canteen pouches, and first aid pouches got issued out,not so much the harness or the ammo pouches. They made M-14 pouches in nylon as well.I picked up an unissued set of those as well.

M67 gear was issued in bigger numbers towards the end of the US involvement in the war , by 1970 you see lots of M67 gear. The most common pieces of M67 gear where the Canteen covers , ammo pouches (both in 20 and 30 round models ) , pistol belts , entrenching tool and cover as well as the 2 quart canteen covers and the Tropical Ruck.
The USMC received the M67 gear at about the same time as the US Army , in 1975 you see lots of M67 gear used by the US Embassy Marines as well as the Marines involved in the S.S. Mayaguez Incident.
USMC RECON teams had M67 gear issued to them in 1968.

Gotcha. So, Obviously canvas was used the longest and probably more common but apparently the 67's were used a good deal too. Ive got four or five 67 canteen covers and the nylon buttpack to use with my mid-late war rig so that shouldn't be pushing the canvas purity law to much.

All the testing for LC-1 gear was done at Fort Benning , state side , the last ground combat troops left Vietnam in '73 , the thing is that M67 and LC-1 do look similar , that is the reason some people confuse M67 with LC-1 in photos.

Thanks to all of you who participated in the Gulf War, your service is no less important than those who served in the Great War alongside Fusilier.

We still carried the M-14 and 1911 on my ship when down there, and the M2 ammo was dated mid 50's. Hell I'd already been to the gulf two times before it all got started(escorting tankers) then sitting around getting a tan on deck till it was time to fire some ordinance inland in support of the push.

It amazes my that the web gear in desert storm is almost exactly the same as from the end of the vietnam war It seems like it always takes a shooting war to overcome procurement inertia for nuts and bolts stuff like web gear (or LBE as it was called in my pre-ALICE day). I'm amazed and fascinated by how much stuff has changed in the last ten years.

We spent a long time adapting to the Desert and had a huge supply of water available to us , from Water Buffalo's and truckloads of bottled water , it was still hard to do anything .
