Found this picture of Col. William O. Darby (later BG), the founder of the WWII Rangers, on a website called "The Grinder, Italy 1943-45." The pic is identified as Darby on a speed march in north Africa with his men, Dec. 5, 1942. Some interesting details. He appears to be wearing cut down leggings. Also lug soled boots. Looks like HBT's. Oddly, they appear to be wearing helmet liners rather than helmets. looks like a M1903 Springfield. The pic was with an article about the loss of two Ranger battalions at Cisterna. Fairly interesting website italy1943-45.devhub.com/

Great example of cut down leggins there. Also I can only speculate as to the helmet -- I would assume it was too hot to wear the steel pot in the desert so they figured liner was better than nothing.....

I'm curious about why the Rangers supposedly preferred the M1903A3 over the M1. Does anyone have the answer to this?

No steel pot? That's so high speed.
