I'm not sure what is considered 'economy', but Landser Outfitters appears to have repro canteen sets in stock. My apologies if this isn't what you are looking for.

Is the plastic cup canteen good for the fj? The aluminum cup one is out.

leather is a bit thin but has so far withstood almost a year worth of weekend skirmishing on my bread bag without any tears or rips. that said, the leather has stretched a bit and i may have to add an extra hole soon to keep everything snug. The hardware and aluminum cup have shown no damage whatsoever. I don't use the canteen as often as say a reenactor would but yes, i do drink from it. the buttons are all still in place.

youchunhe...cheapest replica canteen available. looks like a german canteen, leather is thin, some report metal is flaky. mine isn't. In my book good enough for airsoft but probably will not pass muster with hardcore reenactors.

Eh if the canteen is flaky I might not get it. Don't want to mess with your health. It would probably pass in most reenactment groups. Its more of a personal preference thing. I like my stuff to be 100% correct if I can. I don't do it because of my group I do it because I want too.

Those repro canteens don't look too bad. Original aluminum canteens can get kinda flaky too. I've used the same 2 originals for years in re-enacting. Just make sure that you empty them after events and store them with the cap off. If the leather is thin, try Troy Allison. He makes wonderful repro straps and caps (plus other stuff too). His Ebay name is allibaba34 and his website is www.kriegsendemilitaria.com/Index.htmlAndy

I bought one of these 'youchune' canteens everyone says is so great.
This thing is a piece of crap. The stud on the bottom is about fifteen degrees from center, very noticable.
The canteen itself sheds copious amounts of large metal shards, no matter how often I clean it out...I would never drink out of this thing. Total waste of money.
I guess you're mileage may vary, but I wouldn't re-sell this thing to my worst enemy...even if they would be willing to buy it.

Yea just get one from 1944 Militaria. You won't regret your decision. Other then that Hessen Antique sells nice budget ones. The canteen itself is a incorrect post-war model though.

Serov, I didn't say it was "great". In fact i said it wouldn't pass muster with reenactors...comment was for the more expensive one BTW. What i did say as it was the cheapest one that looked like a German canteen. Also said the leather was thin. That said, it has stood the test of a year's worth of weekend airsoft and has not fallen apart, though the leather has gotten rather loose.

The youchunhe one is good enough. I don't recommend drinking from any of these canteens, especially original WW2 ones. Just hide a plastic water bottle in your breadbag.

labrador, I wasn't referring to you or any one person in particular. I've had other people tell me how swell it was... I just think they are incorrect.
