A I wouldn't suggest asking about the M1 Garand on here as this is an Airsoft forum.

Indeed keep your focus on airsoft. There are tons and tons of great sites that discuss actual firearms. As for the .30 Cal. the SAW gear box is the best choice although the M14 works quite well also. Inspite of what appears to be a lot of room to work with the .30 Cal. when kept to the correct dimensions is actually pretty limiting due in large part to the fairly low point the barrel exits the receiver group.
There have been lots and lots of them built by folks on this forum. Most of them following the Killbucket patterns and built in ABS. Big Ed, Schmitty and others have built them in metal. For all concerned the biggest challenge is the feed system as it's challenging fitting a box to the side so it looks right, functions okay and isn't too awkward. A seperate box is more authentic of course but doing up a quick attaching and detaching system is a little tough. I really like it when it's routed through fake bullet links. And personally for authenticity sake really like that solution.
Another challenge is the tripod or bi pod system which can be fairly involved to design and build. Actual tripods and bipods are of course available as are replicas but they are both quite expensive. I wish you well and look forward to your posted results. You will invest much time and effort but hopefully you will be pleased with your results.
Good luck.
