As the event producer, this AAR is very frustrating and bitter sweet to report. While I was very satisfied with the turnout for the event, just like the real invasion, mother nature had other ideas.
Starting on Friday, June 1st, Field set-up commenced at 12:00hrs. We were later joined by the German CO, Cryonics and his crew of 6. They did a magnificent job in setting up the village (Saint Mere Eglise') for their camp site. Brandon (Rapture) and his fellow turncoat ;D Martin joined us for field setup assistance. By 18:30hrs all systems were ready and go for the night mission.
Beach Obstacles:
At 20:30hrs, approx 15 Germans were assigned to the defend the town of Saint mere Eglise'. As they went about their normal routines, an Elite Advance team of 6 Airborne paratroopers were dropped into the surrounding woods of the nearby town. Their mission was to link up with the French Resistance unit "Marquis", gather intelligence for the forthcoming invasion force some 4 hours later, harass and decoy gerry throughout the night.
The highly trained team took no time in finding their rally point and linking up with the Marquis. Team leader, 1st Sgt Migs sent out his A team comprised of Staff Sgt Dean and Pvt "OD" O'Donnell to advance on the German Garrison. They were accompanied by two French Resistance fighters, Corp Lebeau and Pepe Lepeu. After avoiding a small German patrol, Staff Sgt Dean deftly entered the town and with great expertise and silent stealth, snapped the necks of two Germans. He moved his way throughout the town silently killing two more before being ambushed by Gerry laying low in the weeds.
He did not die in vain as his actions disrupted and confused Gerry throughout the night. As for the other part of the team, Corp Lebeau was confronted, searched and executed by firing squad. Pepe' was not heard from again.
The rest of the night consisted of small skirmishes with plenty of grenade action. 1st Sgt Migs was grenade happy throughout the night. So much that he killed several of his own men, including Corp Lebeau who had his light on and appeared to be searching the woods for Airborne troops. Migs mistook them for Gerry, fired a grenade in his direction and took out Lebeau and several of his own men lying in the woods. ;D, Oh well, shoot first, ask questions later I always say. Later on during the same patrol, Migs and his merry band of men did encounter a German Soldat, one who use to fight with us side by side. Migs having him lined up for a very pleasurable grenade kill, lite his ordinance and tossed if right on target. But to my dismay, right before it landed right at Raptures feet, it hit a small branch and deflected backwards. Rapture now had Migs in his sites and dropped me with one shot. Bravo Rapture you lucky Ba@%*rd!
The rest of the night was spent finding ways into the village. Elite team 6 approached from the direction of Kafir Hill, got as close as 20 meters from their OP's but was pinned down with heavy MG fire and lots of grenades. Team 6 suffered several casualties and could not further advance. All in all Elite team 6 completed their main objective and the Germans held their Garrison. For now. ;D
Saturday June 2nd started as expected. Rain, rain and more rain. While the majority of players stayed the night and hunkered down in their shelters, several new players showed up throughout the AM hoping the weather would improve. We all stood around in the rain and mud for hours, shooting the breeze (instead of each other) deciding what to do. At around 11AM, I contacted the field owner and reported to him the field conditions and our decision to try and wait it out. We both agreed that if were not not able to continue and have our event, we would receive a credit for the event and be able to return for a replacement event at a date to be determined.
At approx 12:00hrs, Those who remained, decided to do an attack and defend on the German Garrison, Plenty of fire fights erupted in the woods, including JP lying in ambush and shooting me with probably the hardest BB I've ever been shot with. That STG 44 hurts! After about 45 minutes of skirmishes, we entered the town and occupied it. Small skirmishes continued and after one hour the game was called. Final result was the Allies took the town.
I would just like to say in closing that I am very appreciative to those who came out for the event in what was really terrible weather. It was great seeing all the familiar faces and meeting some new ones as well. For the past several months I had my doubts as to whether we would have this event, but like I previously said, it's bitter sweet. Attendance was good and showed lots of dedication for our hobby. But the rain had other ideas for us. A special Thank you goes out to JP "Cryonics" and his men as they always out do themselves and bring so much to the table. Thank you JP!
As to what's next, Brandon and I have been kicking around some ideas for a small one day event in August followed by a October "Nazi Zombie" event. As for the replacement event for this one, it will probably occur sometime in November. Stay tuned.
