First off I would like to thank everyone who helped make this event possible with special thanks going out to the Co’s HornetSWO and Cryonics. Steve Hildner always offers his military experience, expertise and leadership to the Allied side. He and his group always have spot on impressions and definitely the best variety of WW2 guns among us. JP McCormick is with out a doubt the best-prepared and dedicated member we have. What he brings to these events never ceases to amaze me. The amount of WW2 antiques, props, guns, landmines, grenades and pyrotechnics is unprecedented. Our events would most certainly suffer without either of these men. Thank you to you both.
I would also like to thank the membership for turning out on this Holiday weekend. I wasn’t sure how attendance would be, but for the most part the numbers were good.
Now onto the event:
There were 16 members (Germans 9, Allies 7) who were present for the night fighting and I can safely say we had a great time. The objective set up by Cryonics was for the Allies to infiltrate the perimeter of the German HQ and light a fuse to detonate an explosive (fireworks) and blow up the HQ. The posture at the German HQ was very relaxed as they only had one guard (Nick) posted by the gate and a two man spot light team. The rest were enjoying their campfire and listening to the latest German music. The seven Allies were a combination of Dutch Resistance fighters and an advance airborne unit. For the first hour or so, a two-man team of Joe Migs and Steve Thomspon crawled their way towards the gate and laid in wait. The other 5 tried to maneuver themselves from the high ground towards their objective. Only Dean Migs managed to enter the German HQ only to be KIA each time by a grenade kill. Dean did manage to take out several Germans in the process and after his second time dying, he took up position close to Joe Migs. Just as he was to make his move through the swamp area, Nick and another guard decided to patrol outside the gate with their flashlights beaming. Seeing this opportunity, Steve Thompson, Joe and Den Migs aimed their weapons and let lose on Nick and his comrade. The comrade went down but Nick felt the need to scream out “Nicht SchieBen” and something else WHILE STANDING. Not understanding what he was saying, we continued lay down short bursts until Nick remembered the English language and told us in choice words to stop firing, he’s hit. Only Nick! Gotta love him. We now decided it was time to make a bold move. Dean was on the move again with Steve and Joe Migs waiting 10 minutes until they would lay down diversionary fire for him. The plan worked out perfectly as Dean made the objective in no time. Once there however, he tried for several minutes to lite the fuse to which he never succeeded. He then decided to abandon his mission and kill Germans instead. As he was laying down fire, a third grenade tossed by Bill actually hit him in the head AND THEN EXPLODED. Very funny. Pretty much right after that it started to rain a little bit harder and we called it for the night. Very good night.
On Saturday, the first mission of the day was for the airborne invasion force to take the Son and the Graves Bridges while securing the stretch of road between both of them. Known as Hell’s Highway. Captain Hildner’s forces had parachuted east and west of the Son Bridge. Once they achieved their rally points, Capt. Hildner laid out a coordinated attack on the Son Bridge. Elements of the 101st west of the Son Bridge took up positions to distract the German defenders from the main assault by Yankee Division. With a .30 cal. MG on the high ground and platoon strength P.I.R close by, Capt. Hildner had Yankee Division “Go on the Red Smoke.” The attack was hard and fast as the ground forces quickly eliminated the German defenders. After consolidating their forces and securing the Son Bridge, Capt. Hildner had his forces make their way up Hell’s Highway towards the Graves Bridge and the town of Nijmegen. In a “pincer” attack, Allied forces slugged their way through tough German resistance but eventually took the Bridge and forced the Germans out of the town Nijmegen. With the Germans licking their wounds, their CO, Cryonics received intelligence that a downed Glider from the 327th G.I.R. was known to have important Allied invasion documents and he should immediately send a team out to acquire this important and vital information. Cryonics sent out team after team into the area only to be thwarted by Allied ground forces. About an hour later, Capt. Hildner received similar intelligence his German counterpart received and sent out a team to achieve the same. After some fierce fighting, the Allies were able to retrieve their documents and push on with their invasion. The rest of the day, Allied ground forces held both Bridges and Hell’s Highway by repelling constant German assaults. Only after a full all out assault by German forces, Cryonics men finally took back the town of Nijmegen. But it was too late as the Allies achieved their objective and cleared the way for the British XXX Corps Armor to push on to Arnhem and across the Rhine.
In closing I would also like to say I wish Brandon Paladino all the very best as he will be shipping out to Fort Benning this coming January. Brandon has been an integral part of this Association for the past few years. He has been involved in every aspect of our events here in the North East and only has hosted several of them as well. He has even assisted me with my events and has proven himself has one of our elite fighters. I’m proud to have known him and would like to wish my friend all the best.
