Typically airborne troops wore a t shirt and underwear along with the wool trousers and wool shirt under their M 42s. Many chose to wear or bring an OD sweater or sweater vest as well. The typical shovel for the paratroopers was an M1910 T shovel although they were frequently shortened for airborne troops. The later folding shovel was available as well.

For 101st underneath the parachutist uniform would have been an assortment of garments. OD Wool pants, OD wool shirt, OD sweaters with or without sleeves, white and OD T shirts too. Cpl Forrest Guth wore a blue hoodie with a grey lining underneath his parachutists jacket when dropped into Normandy. books.google.ca/books?id=pfQAH6XOD-wC&pg=PT42&lpg=PT42&ots=5V6iWALl0V&dq=Forrest+guth+blue+sweatshirt&output=html_textThe shovel, it seems that both were used but from what I have seen in photos the folding e tool seem nearly ubiquitous for 101st, especially the 501st, 502nd and 506th.The e tool covers seem to be a mix with a fair bit of the transitional variety ( OD3 trim with a base being OD7...same goes for the compass pouch). A little bit of research is always a good idea to get some stuff right the first time. Going the the local library and browsing some contemporary accounts of the 101st in wwii wouldn't hurt. Ironically, the internet can often be quite misleading in regards to wwii reenacting.
