Ive been waiting for the DDay announcement. Kind of surprised it hasnt happened.
I just reread this thread and I dont believe that it has gone in the direction you originally intended either. It kind of turned into a discussion on how to hold an event instead of why no one is attending the event. And while it is an interesting read, it is being written by those that are at the events and dont really need the thread.
Lets try to return to the original intent. Why is attendance so low?
If you are one of those that doesnt come anymore, why not?
If it is your buddy not attending, why not?
I know its hard to be honest about why or what you dont like about something. We all like each other and no one wants to insult or upset anyone, but if this is going to be fixed, there has to be honesty. Just do not use insulting language or blame anyone. State your feelings and move to the next point.
I would suggest that any of the promoters should refrain from replying or trying to justify a post. Just let the comments be made, absorb them, and proceed how you deem fit. Dont get angry or defensive, but just listen with open ears.
I have been told a couple things, or been told that reasons are known to people on this board. Get it out there. I would myself, but at this pont, I am thirdhand and dont want to get it wrong. Here is what I do know.
One of the groups that no longer attends stopped coming because of the atmosphere. They were looking for something more intense and immersive. (Yes, I know I throw that out there constantly, but this is their words this time. Not mine.) This group wanted to come and have that ww2 experience. I will not go into the details of all that. Its all been discussed before. But we did lose a full squad because of it.
For me, a problem is lack of cohesiveness. This has nothing to do with the events, producers, locale, or immersion. It is about the players that come. The people that come to the events are great people. I like most of them, and think more than a few are good players. But on the field, it is 20 or 30 individuals running around all willy nilly. This leads me to two points.
My favorite events are the ones where there is a strong leader bringing all the players together and fighting for a common goal. It doesnt have to be an a**hole out there, but someone able to have an understanding of the battleground, goals, and the ability to control the flow of the game, at least from their side of the fence.
I am a firm believer in forming units, squads, teams, whatever you want to call them. Its easy to say Ill catch the next one if you are one man, its harder to say that if you are part of a whole. Something I think should be seriously considered. Jeff and I formed a unit and we attend upwards of 20 events a year between airsoft and reenacting. We split the cost of fuel, cover each other if someone needs help with expenses, and have tents to house us as a group. Makes it much more enjoyable and easy to attend all these events. Feel free to join us, or start your own. You be amazed at how much more you look forward to an upcoming battle when you know you will be with your teammates for the weekend.
Just a couple thoughts. Hope this helps, and I hope more people respond with honest comments on their feelings of the games. If you have or know of a probem, let the promoters know so it can be addressed.
