So after fiddling around with my kit and stuff, I'm wondering was there a specified way the Y-straps were on the shoulders, over the shoulder boards, or under? Also, if hooking the equipment hooks directly onto the belt is correct, in part of missing an ammunition pouch

I always have my Y-straps over them, but I've seen a photo or two with them under, but I can imagine that being problematic. I don't quite understand the second bit, but if you're talking about those hooks, those hook onto the loops behind th mag pouches, to keep them up (though airsoft ones don't weigh enough to be really any use) the loops go around the belt.

Over is much easier.
You wouldnt normally place the hooks directly on the belt, especially considering they dont have anywhere to attach to. If you need to hook to the belt because of missing pouch or say pistol holster on one side, you would buy dring loops. Basically a belt loop with a ring attached. Perfect for attaching y straps. They can be gotten at any WW2 vendor, and usually only a few bucks.

Basically it comes down to what was supposed to be done in theory, vs what was actually done. In theory, yes the Y straps would have gone under the shoulderboards. Hence you see it in some pictures. Yet since the troops were constantly wearing their gear, taking it on, and taking it off, they would have just slung them over their shoulder for convenience. Drizzt04 is also correct about the D rings, just shop around and you will find them pretty cheap.
