Gavin was a good choice for your uniform. I have one from there and the quality is great. For the price they probably make the best German tunics right now. Here is a good place to buy an undershirt. www.omahas.com/german-sleep-shirt-used#.UkbWwxB24xgThese are original post-war, though the are exact copies of the WW2 type. Check out Man the Line's used gear section, I see great deals on there a lot. His new gear has about the best prices you'll find as well. The cheapest place to get Kar98 pouches is probably originals off ebay.

Really? I'm kind of shocked originals are cheaper!

Well, they made what, 8 million Kar98s during WWII? Most all were issued, so they needed to make millions and millions of pouches. I agree, though, usually the "original is less than repro" is usually only US wool shirts and such.

Yep original K98 pouches can still be found for pretty cheap if you look in the right places (eBay-Gun shows).

Well you learn something every day I suppose. By the way, I have a friend who wishes to not fight in airsoft but be a field medic. Is that doable in the average airsoft group? What about your group, Sgt. Tom?

We don't usually do medics at our games but we have before.

He could be a Sani, but depending on the numbers in attendance, he may not get much action. If he does want to be in the game but not shoot, have him be a German war correspondent. He can be in a German uniform and all, just instead of a rifle, he could carry a video camera or a regular camera. It would also help with publicity of events you guys attend in your area.
For the camera, use a good quality modern one, and just put it into a ww2 style camera shell. That way, you still get excellent quality photos and videos and not look Flaggrantly Wrong in the field.

I walked him through the idea of the sanitaters but I like your ideas about him carrying a camera, I suppose when I find a group I wanna stick in I could run that idea through. Anywhere he can find a medic helmet? Haven't seen many repros or decent condition originals on ebay.

Just pick up a regular German helmet repro, and paint it white with the Red Cross. There are a couple of variations, so he would have to pick the one he likes best. The good thing about a war correspondent impression is that, if he ever decides, he can easily add weapons pouches and become a rifleman, instead of buying a second helmet or repainting the first one.

Right, and from that point maybe he can get a helmet cover should he want to become a rifleman.

Don't even bother painting the helmet. The red cross is just a target on your head. I've seen plenty of medic pictures where they had no other identification other then the armband. Some medics even ditched those on the Russian front.

Using a helmet cover would be viable to transition to a rifleman. I didn't think of using helmet covers, as I mostly portray US, and it didn't come to mind.

Well, I'm not completely sure the US used helmet covers on the Western Front so it's understandable.

Also, weren't the SS medics armed?

From what I know most medics Wehrmacht and SS were armed on the Eastern Front, not so much the Western Front. There were no laws preventing German Medics to carry weapons to protect their wounded.

That's another way he could transition then. Just wondering, why doesn't your friend want to be a combatant?

It is indeed a great picture although as POWs their web gear and much of their insignia have been removed or "liberated" by their captors.

i don't know. I've asked him the same thing and he seems like he just wants to be with a group, be in uniform, but wants to be more of a behind-the-fire helper. He also was very interested in that camera-idea, more than being a combatant.
