Given the small size of most WW2 airsoft events. (Typically less then 30 players) and the available US weapons, depicting a US Armored Cav unit makes a lot of sense. Most of the time they fought dismounted and their mission assignments were frequently small group engagements. Recon, Screening Missions, Brief Blocking Force Assignments, Economy of Force Assignments etc. The Table of Organization weapons allocation was quite different then a comporable Infantry Unit as well. For Cav Units the most common weapon was the carbine, followed by the Thompson (later supplemented by M3 Grease Guns) with the Garand a distant 3rd. They had no organic BARs but scrounged and used them often and frequently used captured German weapons as their 100% vehicle mobility provided a means to haul and store them. they had lots of .30 Cal and 50 Cal weapons but these usually operated from their vehicles.
The Cav units were often operating in concert with Tank Destroyer elements where enemy Armor might be present and Engineer Units in place of Infantry Support. With this Cheap carbine available I suspect we'll see more and more carbines on our airsoft battlefields so Cav units would make sense.

A cool idea, especially with all the Thompsons floating around...

Not a bad idea, kinda funny you decided to mention this now, as the local surplus store got a boatload of uniforms with armored infantry patches.

I am not at all familiar with what an Armored Infantry patch would be. In WW2 armored Infantry were conventional Infantry units with full transport who were attached to armored units. Armored Infantry units were primarily transported in Halftracks. Their weapons set up were identical to regular leg units although they had machine guns with virtually each vehicle so obviously far more firepower. The Armored Cav units primarily were equipped with Jeeps and the M8 armored Cars. It is the Armored Cav units that were heavily equipped with sub machine guns and carbines

Since CAV units had 100% mobility. (every trooper got to ride most everywhere in a vehicle) CAV troops were notorious scroungers. though not technically assigned any BARs and officially few Bazookas the reality is they accumulated and brought a wide variety of weapons into battle including the wide spread use of captured weapons. They also enjoyed far better comfort items with regard to bedrolls, tentage and cooking capacity. Not unlike airsofters who frequently car camp!

While there were no BARs assigned it was not the least bit uncommon to see them being used by Armored Cav units who no doubt swapped some of their organic weaponry or assorted trading fodder which a fully mobile unit could haul.
