Should be moved to the Kilroy was here section, but yeah, I saw that. His creation is a legend. It was the first gun I knew the name of.

So sad...it seems the good they die young! Kalishnikov ranks right up there with Colt, Winchester, John Garand and Browning although truth be told, Browning is in a world by himslf. The AK has to be the most recognized weapon in history and one of the most prolific.

In an article I read today Kalashnikov was quoted as saying he had originally wanted to design agricultural machinery. I guess you can see that in his approach to designing a weapon. Simple, sturdy, reliable and pretty much user-proof. The same qualities needed in a machine to be used by poorly educated peasant farmers on the steppes. Also read once that he never received any money for the AK beyond his salary as a state employee, and he was proud of having served Mother Russia.
