Hey folks,
I have a somewhat out of the box question. What would be an appropriate uniform to wear as if I was on leave or had a weekend pass (stateside)? I would imagine it would be OD's and your 4 pocket tunic but I wanted to get some other input first.

You would wear what the army called a class A uniform. As an enlisted man it would be either the wool uniform or in some areas and certain seasons khakis.

As an enlisted man you would wear the service coat or Ike Jacket with the M37 wool shirt and pants. However, it was not uncommon to see soldiers wearing just the wool shirt and pants with tie, and the collar disks when on temporary leave. All decorations were required to be worn on the service coat or Ike jacket, but I'm not so sure about wearing awards on the wool shirt alone. Hope this helps.

Many troops during the war went on leave without having received decorations they had been awarded. The big green machine was woefully behind on such things. Sadly many soldiers NEVER received the metals or awards they were intitled to as the supply chain sometimes never caught up with them. On occassion they would receive a medal at a hastily thrown together ceremony and have a medal pinned on by some high ranking officer only to have the 1st SGT come long and ask for it back as it was "For the ceremony purposes only!". Naturally promises of the real one coming along later were made. Other times the medal and ribbon were handed out but the orders and certificate weren't Given the sheer numbers of people involved the Army traditionally does a VERY GOOD job about such things.
In the Summer a CIB or ribbons which would normally be affixed to the IKE jacket or service coat were often attached to the wool shirt.
My feeling are that for our purposes (playing Army) I'd rather not see awards and medals worn that weren't earned. It however is NOT a huge issue for me when it is obvious one is simply adding to an authentic impression just don't get stupid about it and be sure they are placed properly.

I agree with your statement. I belong to a blank fire unit, and we only award campaign awards (American Campaign, Europe/Africa/Middle East Campaign) solely for the purpose of authenticity.
