As I'm putting the finishing touches on my Kar98 springer conversion, I wonder what I'm going to do with the left over DBoy parts. I don't know what I'm going to do with all of this: My question is, what does everyone else do with their leftovers? Anything interesting, or do you just keep it in a junk box somewhere, never to see the light of day again? I can't imagine there is some sort of market for this stuff.

You could always just save it away. You never know when you might need an odd shaped but of metal. Or you could melt it down into a zinc ingot. Lol

Stick it in the impressions market section or ebay. Someone will no doubt pay SOMETHING for it. (although probably not much). The shells are marketable!

I sold off my shells, the rest either goes in the trash or is retained if I might have some use for it. Some of the pieces of metal may fit into stocks to become weights, but there isn't much other value to it.

I'm noticing that your bolt release and the entire bolt shroud/cocking piece/safety assembly is apparently still on this. Are you not using these, or just haven't gotten to that step?
Cutting off the bolt release, grinding down the back until it's very thin, and JB Welding it to the same spot on the springer works wonders for the looks. Likewise, the bolt shroud etc. from the 98k look much better than what's on most springers, and can very easily be modded to fit on the back of the cylinder (at least on a Bar 10).

Not going to lie, I don't trust myself to do something like that for my Kar98. I understand doing so adds to the whole look and feel, but I'm too afraid that I will mess up with it. I don't have those fine tuned skills everyone here seems to have. I'm just really happy to have it working and shooting straight. Even if I still have to play around with the hopup and adjust the rear sight accordingly.

Drac, if we can both make Graham's game and you're willing, I'd be happy to bring home your 98k and the extra parts, do what I can to perform whatever small but significant mods that really add to the look (like those mentioned above) that I can, and bring it back to you at the next event, all completely free of charge. If you want it back sooner, I'd do the same and ship it back for the cost of return shipping.
Or if you're happy with it as is, then not. But the offer is out there, and stands.

Alright, thanks. If I make the game, I'll take you up on that then, that would be awesome.

I am I guess a pack rat by nature (my wife would say hoarder). When something has even a shread of coolness to it I just can't bring myself to throw it out. I enjoy thinking about how it might be put to use. The take off parts from all the M14 conversions were really starting to take up space. I used some of the parts early on as weights and reinforcement rebar inside resin paste for other projects and then discovered that when I packaged the flash hider with the butt plate flap these comsistently sold on ebay as repair parts. the heat shields I painted brown (they come in black) and sold as a proper NAM upgrade. In Vietnam most of the M14 heat shields were a sort of epresso brown. If I didn't need the stocks these always brought $25.00 on ebay the heat shields $14.00 and the repair bits $20.00 or more. It ended up offsetting the cost of the donor gun but of course listing and monitoring your ebay sales along with packaging and shipping is time consuming. In my case with over 400 take off sets it added up.
The M14 receiver group provide a good look that would be hard to replicate so I made (and continue to mke) dummy M14 and M1 Garands when combined with demilled or low quality stocks and handguards acquired at gun shows. The time fabricating them doesn't justify the return actually but I enjoy doing them and feel that things aren't being wasted. For the cheap springers the take of stamped rear sites (which I replace with a WW2 "L"shaped peep site sell on ebay as reproduction rear sites and in some cases amazingly have returned nearly as much as I bought the rifles for!
This and low cost rental fees offsets the inventory costs considerably! It all comes down to creativity and time. The take of DBoys bolt/ receiver group definitely will jazz up a conversion and deserves to be put to use rather than thrown out.

I definitely agree with the latter since there isn't anything absolutely wrong with it to make it unusable. I'm just not THAT crafty, haha.

Marks offer is a kind one and if you take him up on it you will be pleased with the enhancement.

I already PM'd him about it and I'm going to decline the offer for this one I made. Its not very good, I didn't even use a VSR-10 clone and its just sorts of crude looking. Don't want to waste his time on something that will still look bad. I'll be taking him up on his offer for a conversion down the road. I was going to give him my bolt anyways, just because he offered me.
