Interesting little video here. Apparently the song is about the Fallschirmjaegers. He's collected clips from, it looks like, a mixture of newsreel footage and movies about Crete. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUTUwPDKjF8Just an off the wall thought here. The Battle of Crete would be an interesting scenario. Brits and New Zealanders on one side, Fallschirmjaegers and the 5th Gebirgsjaegers (I think it was) on the other. It was largely a small unit infantry battle. Got to be somewhere in SoCal that looks like Crete....

The final clip of Michael Caine adressing his troops is from a fun movie about an assassination team sent to the UK to kill Churchilll. It had a great cast and was well done. They arrived in the small village disquised as Polish Paratroopers. I don't recall the name of it.
The actual footage of the FJs was very interesting. Can you imagine parachuting with a flame thrower? I suspect that weapon was recovered on the ground!

"The Eagle Has Landed" (1976)
The shots inside the JU-52's look like they were really cramped, compared to the C-47. Each aircraft carried a weapons container that was dropped with the fallschirmjaegers. They jumped with only handguns, at least early in the war. It was a weak point in their method.

I jumped out of C130s, C141s and a C19 boxcar (up in Alaska interestingly) while I was in the military and lots of private aircraft as a civilian. My last jump (10 years ago) was from a C47. Two big surprises. It was the first time I ever took off in a "tail dragger" and the sudden lift in the rear scared the crap out of me. Also though at a slow air speed the lack of a wind foil at the door made the slip stream seem very pronounced and seeing the rear wings as you left the door was odd.
With all the gear a C47 is pretty tight actually although clearly the Ju-52 must have been worse. The stall speed on a JU-52 is really slow so leaving the aircraft was probably pretty mild. Interesting the way the FJs exit the aircraft.

I only did my 5 qualifying jumps and 3 at Ranger School, all from C-141's, except for one out the back of a CH-47 (that was neat, you just step off the ramp) and one out of a C-123. The 123 was supposed to be a daylight drop but they were running late so it was almost dark when we dropped. Felt almost like being in a war movie.
